I'm a bit concerned about the extra stat per directory.
Perhaps the emblem could still be called .DirIcon, but have
a PNG attribute set to indicate that it's an emblem?
You probably want an attribute anyway, to give its position...

I thinks it better to have it orig. way for these reasons:
1. easy of use: everyone knows how to copy file (image) into
directory, and few knows how to assign attributes to an PNG
image
2. you can have separate dir icon and emblem: say image of
smb share (diricon) with each day different emblems
(diremblem) :-)
3. you can applay emblems for AppDirs to their own icons
(quite same as #2)
4. if extra syscall is an issue, then gui config can have a
option to ignore diremblems
But main reason is easy of use and simplicity: cp image.png
$TARGET/.DirEmblem - and you've done!!
And last but not least - thanks for rox.
hope i can contribute to it :-)
