I've tried getting mailman to reject posts from non-members. I remember that
this didn't work before: it just kept them all in a queue and then
sent lots of messages to me telling me to sort it out, which is worse
for me than letting them through and having gmail delete them before I
One option would be to point the mailing list owner address to a dummy
account and forget about it, but it does mean that genuine messages
(e.g. ones that are held due to having large screenshots attached)
would never get seen.
Let me know if you have trouble posting (NB: my first attempt at
posting this failed as I was still subscribed under my old address!)

Subject: rox-user list
Dear Thomas Leonard
I have just unsubscribed from the rox-users mail list.
This is not because of any animus against ROX which I continue
to admire, but because, since subscribing to the list I have been
bombarded with spam, some purporting to come from the list.
It is hard to avoid the conclusion that whoever is managing
your mail list has not been sufficiently rigorous in matters
of security. The result, no doubt I am one of many, means
that yet another source of spam has my email address.
This cannot be doing you any good either. I suggest you
broadcast to all members of the list and change your mail
list server pronto.
