Impressive. Doesn't happen here: vi reports that stdin isn't a terminal,
and the message is displayed by ROX-Session. You can then kill vi from
System. I can't really see why X would be involved here, anyway. Perhaps
you ran X from a text console, and vi starting has suspended it somehow?
In that case, switch to the VT that X was launched from and quit vi...
