Just came across a nice gnome applet that does excatly what i want:
To bad it insists on runing as applet inside the gnome panel.
So, my question, anyone experimented yet with using or rewriting gnome applets to run as rox applets?

There was some work going on with this, but I'm not sure what happened to
it. Basically, we need something that pretends to be the GNOME panel but
actually just sticks things in the filer's panel.
In this particular case, it would probably be easiest to convert the program
which the GNOME applet was adapted from:
This runs in its own window; anyone want to have a go at making it a panel
