Hi everyone! I've finally got around to making a new developer release :-= ) Get it here: (source and Linux-x86 binary archives at present): http://rox.sf.net/rox_download.php3 The filer now requires Gtk+-2.0 (which installs easily alongside Gtk+-1.2): =09 http://www.gtk.org/ Changes since 1.2.0: New features: - Fully converted to Gtk+-2.0, plus much related code tidying. This means: - Nicer fonts (see the FAQ). - Flicker free redraw of everything. - Better looking. - Icons in buttons. - When setting the icon for a directory, offer to create a .DirIcon (requested by Matjaz Mihelic). - Allow subdirectories in the Send To menu (Stephen Watson). - Filer windows update automatically when the font changes. - Auto-raise panels when the pointer hits the side of the screen, and low= er when it leaves the panel (Geoff Youngs). - New 'Short titlebar flags' option (requested by Andras Mohari). - Large (over 50K) image files are now loaded in a subprocess. Faster, le= ss likely to crash due to bad images, and more responsive. - Converted dialog boxes to new, much better, style. - New panel style. Better looking, and sensitive right up to the edge of = the screen. - Added Newer option for Copy and Move operations (Stephen Watson). - Changes to options now take effect instantly. The old Apply button is g= one, and Cancel is now Revert. Bug fixes: - Fixed a minor redraw box (a single pixel could get left after a lasso d= rag). - Fixed sensitive region of icons in large-with-details display (Bernard Jungen). - Centre colour selector on mouse, and close when options box closes. - Got background pixmaps working with Gtk+-2.0. - Fixed stupid bug in charset conversions (reported by Andras Mohari). - Fix possible type conversion problem in charset conversion code (report= ed by Serban Udrea). - In an Infobox, strip trailing newlines from file's output as Gtk+-2.0 l= abels display them. - Fixed problem which allowed the panel to get the input focus (reported = by Brendan McCarthy). Changes: - Display action window questions in bold (suggested by Andras Mohari). - Removed remaining support for the old libvfs. - Set _WIN_HINTS for pinboard and panel icons so that they don't appear o= n task-lists or get selected when Alt-Tabbing (Brendan McCarthy). - Allow COMPOUND_TEXT target for pinboard and panels (allows pasting into gnome-terminal). =20 - The Path Entry minibuffer now highlights invalid paths in red, instead = of beeping. - Informational messages are now shown with the info icon, not the error = symbol (suggested by Andras Mohari). - Place action windows under pointer (suggested by txapela). - Set collection style in the program. Choices/ROX-Filer/Styles is no lon= ger used. - Removed pinboard text background style option (it never worked with Gtk= +-2.0). - Much improved layout for Options box (Andras Mohari). - Code tidying in various places (Bernard Jungen). - Various speed improvements. - Changed 'Ignore case' option to 'Intelligent sorting', which now handle= s numbers in a sensible way, so that 'file10' comes after 'file9', etc (M= icah Dowty). Translations: - Added Danish translation (Christian Storgaard). - Updated Polish translation (Krzysztof Krzy=BFaniak). =20 - Filenames which are not valid UTF-8 are shown in red. A tooltip explain= s the problem. CHARSET is used to try and render the name anyway, and the ren= ame box can be used to fix it (reported by Christopher Arndt). - Times weren't converted to UTF-8, causing errors in some locales (repor= ted by Christopher Arndt and tracked down by Andras Mohari). - Allow xml:lang attribute in AppInfo files for translations; see ROX-Filer/AppInfo.xml for an example (suggested by Wilbert Berendsen). SOAP: - Added PanelAdd and PinboardAdd SOAP methods (Stephen Watson). Enjoy! --=20 Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |

Thomas (et. al.) Has anyone tried 1.3.0 with the latest gtk 2.0.2/glib 2.0.1/etc. ? I found two changes in the gtk headers that I 'fixed' but I get runtime=20= errors after the fixes. Specifically, :~/Apps/ROX-Filer/src$ diff options.c options.c~ 745c745 < treepath =3D gtk_tree_path_new_root(); --- > treepath =3D gtk_tree_path_new_first(); :~/Apps/ROX-Filer/src$ diff usericons.c usericons.c~ 706c706 < _gtk_widget_set_accel_path(item, NULL, NULL); /* XXX */ --- > gtk_widget_set_accel_path(item, NULL, NULL); /* XXX */ :~/Apps/ROX-Filer/src$ diff appmenu.c appmenu.c~ 192c192 < _gtk_widget_set_accel_path(item, NULL, NULL); /* XXX */ --- > gtk_widget_set_accel_path(item, NULL, NULL); /* XXX */ I don't particularly like the _gtk fix. It seems that this interface is=20= deprecated? and that there are widget-specific replacements??? Hmmm, this email keeps getting rejected, so forgive me if it shows up multiple times... Uhh, nevermind. I somehow failed to finish my gtk 2.0.2 install. It installed enough so that pkg-config thought it was done, but the libs are no where to be found. Sorry to bother... This is an issue with GTK+, not ROX-Filer. The GTK+ developers decided to change the default behaviour for GTK+ 2.0, so why should ROX-Filer (or any other application) explain it? All these changes are documented in the GTK+ 2.0.0 release notes at http://www.gtk.org/gtk-2.0.0-notes.html We knew that GTK+ 2.0 would bring major changes, so we shouldn't be surprised if things don't work as before. ;-) Regards, Andras Mohari |

I'm not saying we have to 'explain' it. But put a couple of sentence in the already existing dialog box is not a big effort, I think. They could just be like "In order to enable this feature, you have to set the GTK property gtk-can-change-accels. Please refer to GTK documentation to learn how to do it." I consider the capability to change accells on the flight as one of the coolest (and useful) features of GTK* 1.x, and I'm glat that it survived the 2.0 issue, even as a non-default feature. Well, Thomas has put it in already. OK, I see your point, but I still think that it isn't the application developers' task to ask people to read the GTK+ docs. If it was theirs, new GTK+ apps would be full of such messages. In an ideal world ;-) we'd first read the documentation and ask only if it didn't help. > I consider the capability to change accells on the flight as one of the > coolest (and useful) features of GTK* 1.x, and I'm glat that it > survived the 2.0 issue, even as a non-default feature. Well the question is, just what is it possible to change in a module? Personally, I miss some of the other features of the RISC OS interface, such as adjust-clicking a menu keeping the menu open after a selection and adjust dragging a scroll bar to give two-directional control. Being able to drag a menu via a title-bar to reposition it is nice too. Are changes like this possible via an external module rather than a re-write of sections of GTK? Maybe this is a little off scope, but would it be possible to change the default GTK save widget to open a ROX save dialogue instead? The standard GTK 'Windows' style one is the *most* annoying thing to navigate..... -- Robert Davison. |

It just says it wants a filename. - Some applications like to add things to the box and mess around with stuff that's already there. - We don't get told the type of the data, or when the save is complete (so, no dragging to other applications). Hopefully these can be worked into the new saver widget... -- Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |
