It's now about 7 months since the 1.0.0 release and a lot of stuff has gone into the filer since then (applets, for example). Assuming there are no problems in 1.1.6, isn't it about time we got a new stable release? -- Stephen Watson Physicist Ultra Electronics Ltd - Signature Management Systems (UESMS) Tel: +44 (0)1543 878888 (switchboard) Fax: +44 (0)1543 878249 Email: wa...@ul... |

Did they appear in a later version than the early ones I've used? Also, does anyone know of a graphical ssh/scp file transfer client which works with ROX? Or even just a GUI ssh/scp file transfer client? If not, there's another app idea... Finally, I see LUIGUI is no more. Does anyone know of a general X usability and user interface mailing list? |

Seems a bit slow, though. I wonder if it's creating a new connection for every stat? Also, it beeps too much when you enter the path. -- Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |

I've been wondering: are there advantages to having the panel act more like an iconbar, or is it worth implementing a second iconbar, as a distinct task? At the moment the panel acts like TinyDirs, which is fine, and with AppInfo.xml being able to extend the menu makes it even more useful. Advantages: ~~~~~~~~~~ * Mosts tasks running on RISC OS can be determined by quickly looking at the iconbar. * Full context sensitive menus are available. * The user has the choice between opening a new document or starting another copy of the app. * A distinction of use between the iconbar and the pinboard above it. Disadvantages: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Cleverness would be needed so that a ROX app could run without the iconbar. Thoughts? Cheers, Andrew -- Andrew Flegg -- mailto:an...@bl... | http://www.bleb.org/ |

Also, more cleverness to make non-ROX apps work *with* the iconbar! I had it this way originally, but basically you just get a completely empty bar, except for Edit and Archive, because nothing else supports it! -- Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |

That, however, isn't completely unheard of in the RISC OS world - just unusual. !Chars being the obvious example. > I had it this way originally, but basically you just get a > completely empty bar, except for Edit and Archive, because nothing > else supports it! Good point, but the current blur between TinyDir-style shortcuts and RISC OS-like applets is (IMHO) confusing: especially if you quit an applet but the space is still taken up. Yes, the app support for a RISC OS style iconbar is currently lacking, but it'll grow; is more powerful, IMHO; more useful for getting an "at a glance" indication of what's running. I'd *like* Netscape to only take up a small part of my iconbar and spawn a new window when clicked, rather than acting like it currently does. This *could* be kludged, by having Netscape running with an applet and then using the Netscape remote-control facility; but then you've still got the blur between applets and attached-icons. On a vaguely related note, it'd be a nice part of the ROX style guidelines if applets could open their menus in the same place as the panel: I tried looking at Clock to make it do so but since I'm only a GTK newbie, I gave up :-/ Cheers, Andrew -- Andrew Flegg -- mailto:an...@bl... | http://www.bleb.org/ |

Applets don't have that information. (I use a right panel because that was the only screen edge that wasn't already cluttered). -- Stephen Watson Physicist Ultra Electronics Ltd - Signature Management Systems (UESMS) Tel: +44 (0)1543 878888 (switchboard) Fax: +44 (0)1543 878249 Email: wa...@ul... |

Well, that was mainly for testing. I'm not too keen on applications crashing removing them from the panel, but we could set it up so that a normal exit removes them automatically... > I'd *like* Netscape to only take up a small part of my iconbar and > spawn a new window when clicked, rather than acting like it currently > does. With recent versions of Netscape, it does exactly that! > On a vaguely related note, it'd be a nice part of the ROX style > guidelines if applets could open their menus in the same place as the > panel: I tried looking at Clock to make it do so but since I'm only > a GTK newbie, I gave up :-/ You have to pass a positioning function to gtk_menu_popup which will place the menu. Have a look in ROX-Filer's menu.c. Working out which side you're on is tricky, though. We could set a property on the panel window to indicate the side. -- Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |

Under RISC OS you'd just create an icon with window handle -1 or -2. Compare the !Alarm program on RISC OS with my Clock applet. -- Stephen Watson Physicist Ultra Electronics Ltd - Signature Management Systems (UESMS) Tel: +44 (0)1543 878888 (switchboard) Fax: +44 (0)1543 878249 Email: wa...@ul... |

Well, I'm just rewriting the directory scanning code and the resizer, and there's the Send To menu stuff to go in. Also, I'd like the next stable release to support both Gtk 1.2 and 2.0, and we'll have to wait until at least Gtk 1.3.7 before we can even test 2.0 support properly... Maybe in a couple of months we could do a feature freeze? -- Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net ta...@ec... ta...@us... |
