Wha? Thats right folks. Instead of doing something constructive today i rewrote the SoftwareIndex Wiki page for your viewing pleasure! (thats http://rox.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php/SoftwareIndex) So... This means that its easier to get around and find the applications that you want. All of the Core rox apps (Filer, Session, Edit, Archive, Memo, System, etc) are on the main page right at the top, so you can easily get information on the apps and download them. Each program has its own wiki page, with all the information taken from the original HTML page. Now you can see info on the app, some screenshots, and download it all from one page Apps for ROX are below this (MusicBox, Stephen's stuff) with links to the respective webpages. This makes it alot easier to find all the main ROX programs. One problem i had with the original wiki page was the fact that it took alot of effort to get all the main programs that i wanted to use (When 0install failed and i found i didn't have a local copy of anything :-O) The other sections, with linux apps are down the bottom, clearly stating that they usually have *no* relation to ROX, they are just other Linux programs. Anything bad? Sadly, yes... I was half way through copying the download links off the old html files when i wondered why they weren't on the wiki to start with. The most obvious reason would probally be the fact that its a wiki... This means anyone can change the download link and make you download something bad. Hey, they can even change the link to the signature, so you really can't tell if you are getting the real deal How to fix this you ask? The Easiest way is probally to lock the wiki page so only WIkiAdmins can edit it. If we wanted people to be able to ask questions or make comments on an application, we could always have another page linked from the main page (eg EditTips) What has to be done? Lots! Feedback from everyone would be great, either on the wiki or on the lists. The layout still isn't standardised, i started with a layout that i thought was good, untill i started editing the pages by Thomas and realised that they were better. Ill get around to changing them and putting in other peoples ideas soon. Also, I am having some problems deciding where to put the SoftwareIndex/DesktopUtilities page. The two options basicly are: * Keep it generally as is, splitting the main SoftwareIndex page into sections and having each section link to a new page.=20 * Put all the apps on the SoftwareIndex page. It may make it really big, but will give direct access to all ROX related apps. What are peoples opinions? Do we really need links, info and icons for all of other peoples apps? (Stephen's, Ken's, Peter's) or is a link to their own index with a brief rundown of the apps there enough? Whats next? The Great HomePage Refactor Im sure the homepage can be changed to make it a bit more obvious as to where you can find information and files. The Great Installation Refactor The install pages seem to be a bit flakey, and its hard to find your way around them. there have been complaints by other people i have noticed, so maybe something more intuitive can be thought up The Great CSS Editing spree who here likes yellow backgrounds... :-P I think a slight hack of the css for the wiki would make it look lots better. Adding some ROX icons in instead of the default phpwiki ones, and changing the background to the same colour as the old ROX website would go a long way to making the wiki look nicer ZzZzZzzZzzz.... Yeah, ok. This email was really long. So sue me :-) Alastair --=20 (o< - A l a s t a i r P o r t e r //\ =20 V_/_ alastair@...
