I've no particular objection to a thin drag-bar on the left of the window which can be dragged out to reveal some kind of navigation aid. I'm not sure a tree is very useful, either. Filer windows tend to be quite small and trees like lots of space. Eg, if you're 6 levels deep, with only the ancestor nodes expanded (ie, the smallest possible set of visible nodes) and, say, 10 items per directory (very conservative!), that's a minimum of 60 items! I seem to spend rather a lot of time scrolling up and down in tree displays... One thing that might be useful is to just show siblings of the current directory in a flat list. So, if you're in Images/Planets/Earth and browsing pictures of the Earth, you'll see a list of the other planets along the side.
