Preben, You could bring up the 'GoTo:' mini-buffer (the default hot key is '/') and start typing the name of the file. It uses tab-completion (being an old-Bash head, you should love that :D) But, I guess this only helps if you're looking for a file by name, and not by contents or mod dates...
