This is one of my favorite features of the BeOS Tracker (its file manager). Right-click a directory, and you can navigate the whole subtree through menus (kinda like KDE's disk navigator, only faster) . Click on one of a subdirectories, and it pops up a new window showing its contents. Click on a file, and it opens it with its default app.

There was a RISC OS app that let you bring up a menu on any
    window's title
bar showing the directory structure. It worked like you
describe, but you could use it with any application, not
    just the filer.

Maybe that would be a better solution?

loving this suggestion, been thinking about it a few times
in other file managers and it's very usefull for picking out
files in directories to move them somewhere, or play them
    (categorizes movies/music).
