Hi folks, Can someone please explain how to tie two notes across a barline? To do this, it seems to me that initially the last note on the first bar and the first note on the second bar must simultaneously be selected, after which Phrase / Tie can be applied (or just '~'). But, selecting these two notes first seems not to be possible. Another seemingly relevant menu option -- Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at Barlines -- seems not to work either. This same option can apparently also be found in the quantization dialog window, except that when I click 'Q' in the notation editor to start it up, nothing happens. My setup consists of Rosegarden 10.04.2 running on Linux (Debian squeeze). Thanks, Jaap |

I don't know the answer to your issue, but I will recommend upgrading to the latest version of Rosegarden before continuing and possibly your version of Debian, Rosegarden 10.04.2 is very old (current version is 13.02). Debian Sid & Wheezy have at least v12.04, as do current versions of Ubuntu. -- Brett W. So, do you think this may not even be possible with the latest version? Cheers, Jaap PS -- I will upgrade soon enough, but for the moment v10.04.2 is what I have to work with. |

I don't know, you would have to try it (I don't use Rosegarden for notation, maybe someone else knows). But you might not get any support for something in an old version that works correctly in the latest version. -- Brett W. If it's just not selecting anything, like if you drag the bluish rectangle around notes but they don't get selected, you may have to close the segment window and open it again. Sorry about that. I can't even compile 10.04, so there is no way for me to confirm or deny whether it had a strange selection bug. There were selection bugs involving using keyboard shortcuts to extend selections, bugs involving selections with tied notes, and bugs involving selections in the matrix that have all been fixed since then. A selection bug in 10.04 is possible. Using 13.02, I'm having absolutely no problems selecting notes on either side of a bar line and tying them together. It is worth noting, however, that the first time I tried this, I wasn't thinking at all, and I tried to tie two notes that weren't at the same pitch! That failed, of course, because a tie is only possible on notes that are the same pitch. > Another seemingly relevant menu option -- Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at > Barlines -- seems not to work either. That option works, but it doesn't do what you think it does. That is for the case where, for example, you have a bar of 4/4 that has a half note on the last beat. A bar like that will be drawn with a red bar line instead of a black one, showing you that the contents of the bar don't add up correctly. In that case, it contains five beats. The tie notes at bar lines function will split that half note into two tied quarter notes, extending one of them into the next measure, and resolving the red bar line. -- D. Michael McIntyre |

A selection bug in 10.04 is possible. I'm back in my studio now and gave it a try on 13.02, both ties and phrasing slurs across barlines work fine for me. I am sure sometime in the past I probably had attempted this before without any trouble in earlier versions (at least as far back as 11.x). -- Brett W. Sorry about that. Okay, I've tried opening and re-opening the segment window, but nothing seems to do the trick -- it simply will not allow me to select two notes on either side of a barline. So, I will assume this is indeed a bug related to v10.04.2 and look forward to seeing it work after I upgrade to v12.04, which comes with Debian wheezy. Thanks for your explanation and thanks also to D. Michael McIntyre for his regarding the "Adjust / Notes / Tie Notes at Barlines" function. Cheers, Jaap |

Hello Jaap, I am certain 10.04 is full of selection bugs. I know one of my contributions post 10.04 dealt explicitly with selection in the notation editor and handling forward and backward ties. Getting tied ntoes to be selected as a unit. I also recall Michael, twiddling with the selection of notes as well since actually picking the note was problematic as well. I'm certain you will get much satisfaction in this area if you upgrade. My setup seems to be working fine. The problem occurred when I opened the notation editor with only one segment selected. Selecting all segments from the edit menu before opening the notation editor made the problem go away. Tim Munro |
