I just want to complain for a minute.
I wasn't able to get a workable environment on my SuSE 9.1 for lilypond
2.6 to compile (libpango and other) so I upgraded to SuSE 10. Now after
rebuilding rosegarden I can't get it to run.
Rosegarden 4-1.2.3 - AlsaDriver - alsa-lib version 1.0.9
JackDriver::initialiseAudio - JACK server not running
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:455:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed:
AlsaDriver::initialiseMidi - couldn't open sequencer - Permission denied
rosegardensequencer: seq.c:3271: snd_seq_get_queue_status: Assertion
`seq && status' failed.
KCrash: Application 'rosegardensequencer' crashing...
This is probably in the archives somewhere but I just felt like
complaining. The SuSE 10 upgrade has not been a happy one.
It seems the sound system isn't starting up.

There's your answer.
A typical setup has /dev/snd/seq as root:audio, with 660 (rw-rw----)=20
permissions. Your user needs to be in the audio group to gain access.
I did say *typical*. Your mileage may vary.
One way or another, this error message tells us some things
* /dev/snd/seq does exist (which is good)
* this probably means the ALSA MIDI stuff is loaded (which is good)
* you don't have access to open this (which is bad)
So you need to fix the access issue in the most SusE-appropriate way. =20
Typically (*typically*) by adding your user to the audio group and then=20
logging back in.
(If this is a stupid suggestion, remember I've never run SuSE, and I haven'=
run a RPM-based distro since kernel 2.4.16 was new.)
