I think what it amounts to is they are both true, which effectively makes the 
RTC timer useless, and makes the whole thing a great tragedy.

The last I remember it's kind of a try it and cross your fingers thing.  If it 
works, great.  If it locks up your system, then don't use it.

In your case, I'm not sure what to suggest.  Chris Cannam is the timing issue 
guru around here, but he's apparently not around here just now.

Rosegarden-4 1.0 is almost three years out of date.  I can load this file with 
1.5.0, and it seems to be just fine.

Here, let's try this.  Open Konsole (System -> Terminal Program (Konsole)) and 
type (or paste):

sudo apt-get remove rosegarden4
cd /tmp
wget http://rosegarden.sourceforge.net/rosegarden4_1.5.0pre1-1_i386.deb
sudo apt-get install dssi* jackd qjackctl libxml-twig-perl kdialog xdialog
sudo apt-get install lilypond flac sox mpg321
sudo dpkg -i rosegarden4_1.5.0pre1-1_i386.deb

See if that works for you.  I just threw a checkinstall package up on our 
server at SourceForge, rather than write out build instructions for you.  I'm 
running Kubuntu 6.06, and if you follow the above steps, it should work, 
since I built that package on the same version of the same distro you're 
running.

It's worth a try anyway.

	2) RTC will lock up your system, don't use it with Rosegarden.

I cannot use the "third way" of the ALSA sample-clock timer because I'm not using the ALSA-based built-in audio chip at all; I've got a laptop with a firewire audio card with no ALSA, just JACK.

My system has HPET, and RTC is emulated using HPET, so I expect that's mean it'd be an excellent timing source.
