Someone a while ago pointed out that Ohloh has an estimate of the "project
cost" of Rosegarden, currently standing at USD 2,253,223 for 41 person years
Just for comparison, check out their analysis of Sonic Visualiser:
It's estimated at USD 710,310, and 13 person years of work. But this project
is as close to a known quantity as you can get in the open source world: it
was entirely written by one person, working more or less full time, in a bit
