I've got a simple one segment composition that I entered into the notation
editor as a step recording. The entire thing consists of machine-entered 8th
notes, and it plays at 115 bpm.
I'm hearing random note drops. Just once in awhile, no note sounds. It's
never the same note in a row. I've had plenty of problems like this in the
past using QSynth and such, but this is the SB Live!
My Sound Canvas doesn't seem to be exhibiting the same behavior.
I suppose first in my mind is to wonder if anyone else has had similar trouble
out of the SB Live!. Maybe it's a hardware problem, or maybe it's choking on
some aspect of the way Rosegarden feeds it the stream of events.
Probably nothing to be done for it, but I thought it worth mentioning, since
this is the most common MIDI-in-hardware soundcard on the planet.

I have an SB Live(!), and I have this problem with all MIDI applications on
Linux. I believe I saw it mentioned in the ALSA 'documentation' somewhere
(probably a random Google away); in a nutshell I think they know about the
problem but they don't know the cause.
