I don't guess it's a huge problem. Especially since the ads don't show up if you use Konqueror. I had to start Firefox to see what you were talking about. That is strange indeed, but I think most people looking at our site would just ignore those the same way I ignore all the stupidly inappropriate ads that show up in other contexts. It always seems like the sites that get to the top of these things are always the most flagrantly obnoxious ads, like "SpamMart has a special one day sale going on snerf herder retribution cycles, click now and explore the great deals before they go away!" So I'd be inclined to ignore this, and not waste energy trying to tailor the ads. Unless we get more money if people actually click stuff. In which case let's get some porn ads on there. "Now in the Garden of Roses, we have HOT NAKED WOMEN IN YOUR AREA WHO WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU TODAY! CLICK NOW!!!!!!!!" Or on a more serious note, we could get ads for Roland, Yamaha, mAudio, zzZounds.com, something relevant. > Either way, I imagine the big question is simply whether it'll make enough > money to be worth the ugliness and faff. Faff. This word doesn't exist in the American lexicon, but I think we should adopt it. > I stuck the ads up there > yesterday afternoon, and -- the excitement -- it's already earned us one US > cent! I'm still waiting to reach the $10 mark on my Amazon referrals thing. I've been waiting for months now. I'm kind of underwhelmed by the potential money making opportunities for anyone who isn't selling porn. -- D. Michael McIntyre |

Well, I signed up to Google AdSense and have stuck some ads on the RG homepage, just to see what happens. So far we seem to be getting largely ads for Windows-based music notation software. That's a bit strange to look at, but I dunno, is it a problem? I suppose it might be nice to be funded by our competitors' advertising budget, and perhaps seeing the alternatives up there all the time will spur us to greater things, or something... or perhaps not, and perhaps it's just weird and iffy. It is possible to weed out competitors' ads by URL in the Google ad manager, but I haven't done anything like that yet. Either way, I imagine the big question is simply whether it'll make enough money to be worth the ugliness and faff. I stuck the ads up there yesterday afternoon, and -- the excitement -- it's already earned us one US cent! They cash out when you reach each multiple of USD 100, so at this rate I reckon we'll be seeing some handy funding dollars in about 2016. Let's hope the dollar's recovered a bit by then. Chris |

I hadn't had to log in since I can't remember when. It's irritating as hell. This combined with their retarded login page not having a link back to where you just were is enough that two days into it, I'm ready to start screaming obscenities at whatever fucking genius apparently broke the code that used to make your login work for some long interval. We should go file a bitch ticket or something. -- D. Michael McIntyre |
