Around the release of 2.6.27, 2.6.28, or so, the RT-patch at that time was officially merged into the main-line kernel. So if the kernel (since then) is properly configured, it should have some decent/basic RT capabilities. Of course, a new RT-patch was later re-introduced. I don't follow that and don't know all the details, but it may mean their RT-patches may not have been approved into the main-line kernel, or their (experimental???) techniques may have different focus than the main-line kernel.
