Not sure if I can. The school has some strict policies about identifying minors online and posting their creative works online. I definitely will need to have permission from the parents. In this age of internet stalking of children, our school has a pretty cautious approach to these things. I wouldn't post a student's work without giving them credit and the issue of identifying them online brings up a conflict. Hello, RG Thorn was an incredibly valuable tool for making accompaniments in my last school concert. Working with the notation editor and drum event editor provided a great way get where I needed to be. I now have two questions: 1. When picking a synth, I was unable to read the name in the synth display box on the left part of the screen. I usually used synth --> Fluidsynth DSSI --> some.sf2 ......... but the name "some.sf2" was not readable 2 Once segments are created, they can not be added onto? I was thinking of how I used other notation programs that let you add additional measures to the end. Instead, I created a new segment and it did the same... just a different way of thinking I guess.. more modular... The work I do all involved Studio -> Manage MIDI Devices. So I have no helpful answer. I know I can change playback device names in Manage MIDI Devices and they show up on the left side of the screen. Pretty cool. >From the main canvas you can use the resize tool to add length to either end of the canvas. F6 looks like <-|-> * Select the resize tool * Move the mouse to the end you wish to extend * Left click and drag to lengthen or shorten the segment Default behavior is to extend based on beat. Hi Brian, Julie already mentioned that you can resize a segment. You can also join segments. Sometimes I do that rather than resize. I am a middle school music teacher myself. The trick for those of us who were classically trained is to think from a sequencing point of view. Rosegarden is a sequencer first and a notation editor second. When you think about it this way, some of the things Rosegarden does make more sense than it would if it were exclusively a notation editor. Hands down, it is my most favorite musical application that I have ever used because it is so flexible. Aside from creating accompaniments, how else are you using it in school? I teach composition to my 5th and 6th graders with it. The 5th graders have to write a 16 bar piece in AB form over the I VI IV V progression with at least a melody and bass line. The 6th graders have to write a 12 bar blues in AAB form with a melody, bass line, rhythmic chord part (either guitar or keyboard) and a drum line (using the percussion matrix editor for this). Those that complete that quickly have to write a solo break with an improvisatory feel and then return to the original AAB. Kids write some cool stuff. I make a CD of their pieces and play it as prelude music for our concerts. Great of you to provide your students with a technologically modern music education. Do you have a midi setup? More than one computer? I use my personally built computer at school. I had a projector several years ago but the bulb burnt out and I never received another one. When the projector was working, I did used RG 1.7.3 a lot during class so we could have a visual aid for the accompaniments we were using. Someday I would like to get to the spot where I could incorporate a music computer lab. But your story is very encouraging! Also I think it is good to use something like Lilypond to do the real hardcore typesetting stuff, this enables you to separate the content (the music) from the presentation and layout (the typeset notes), the same way for writing documents and typesetting them in (La)TeX. I guess that the creation of two versions, MIDI one and notation one, is really fitting. Hi Brian, I have 12 computers in my room with 64Studio on them. Most of them just use a software synth like ZynAddSubFx. I have 4 with MIDI interfaces attached and keyboards connected to them. I am the only one in the district using RG but there are other schools in the state moving to all Linux and those districts have put their music teachers in touch with me. I just did a presentation on opensource music solutions at an educational opensource conference. The folks that are less tech savvy seem to gravitate towards MuseScore and the ones who are more tech savvy go towards Rosegarden. It is still a very small number of people (probably count on one hand) on opensource solutions but will probably grow in this economy; especially if more schools go to Linux on the desktop.
