This is one thing English gets right. A pencil is an it, dammit. I know that you have a real issue against this Spanish idiosyncrasy :) OTOH= , I=20 think that the way English among others pretend that sex should not be name= d =20 at all is pretty stupid. Like the politically correct language, or Janet =20 Jackson's boob affaire. LOL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dl64KTLIcIAM More seriusly, Latin can't be blamed alone for your gender nightmare. In=20 Spanish, as in all Romance languages, the grammatical gender of inanimate=20 entities is quite arbitrary, and often different from that used in sister=20 languages. For example, Portuguese "=E1rvore" ("tree") and "flor" ("flower"= )=20 are feminine, while Spanish "=E1rbol" and Italian "fiore" are masculine;=20 Portuguese "mar" ("sea") and "mapa" ("map") are masculine, while French "me= r"=20 and "mappe" are feminine. In Spanish, "mar" can be either masculine or=20 feminine, but never neuter. :-) Regards, Pedro |
