Score one for Rosegarden. Some dear friend. What a pain in the ass to do anything with this thing. I got lulled by having a printout that looked like something, and all those nifty things like being able to put repeats and special barlines and stuff, but it was short-lived. Rosegarden kicks Noteworthy Composer's ass, except for the business of 30,000 missing features. Sigh. So, here's Plan B. I'm thinking Chris is going to get around to fixing all of these issues right around the time I'm a great grandfather. I can't fix diddly, and nobody else can either, so far. So... What do we do in Linux? If you can't do it right, do it crappy, and get something to work. I think I'm going to start work on the old "insertable Lilypond directives" idea I crapped over bigtime a few years ago. Printing playable music with Lilypond is a reality (to get all the things in that Rosegarden can't do, plus it looks rather better too), and hand editing generated Lilypond code is about as productive and sustainable as hand editing generated UIC code. It SUCKS, which is what set off this whole tirade in the first place. So what we need is a way to get stuff into the generated code that Rosegarden can't actually display or perform. Crap. Mucho sucketh, but not as sucketh as trying to use any of these other things. Bleah. I'm still disenchanted with the whole sad state of affairs all around, but what choice do I have? Other than dropping the cash for a Mac and Sibelius, which I ain't got, not much. Assuming Sibelius wouldn't piss me off just as much, and I bet it would. I hate change. NWC is a good little proggie, but we do a number of things better for all that. We're a lot more adult about the way we handle key signature changes and whatnot, for instance. We're a lot more adult about a lot of things, and we're trying to be a big league notation package, while NWC is piddly and simple by design. The only problem with Rosegarden is that we lack so many incredibly important features. We're like a half-built Mercedes Benz that only has one gear in the gearbox, and only turns to the left, but damn that interior is comfortable, and the walnut burl dash board is first rate. Well, anyone following my whining and giving a rat's ass should be delighted to witness my little turn-around here. Sort of. I'm still as glum and curmudgeonly as ever, and still as disgusted that after all this time the damn notation editor just can't get out of first gear. Also annoyed that nobody cares, and everyone who's doing anything else apparently intends to concentrate their effort on completely useless projects like rewriting the stupid canvas thing again, or fretboard and tab whatzits for an instrument I don't read music for anyway. Bah humbug. People pursuing their own agendas instead of mine is lame. -- D.
