[Rosegarden-user] Segment repeats From: SlowPic - 2005-02-06 16:03:23 ```Hi all, in one track I recorded two segments which should play as follows: |:segment1:| |:segment2:| In words, segment1 should be played and repeated, then segment2 should be played and repeated. Though I marked both segments individually as "repeat", only the 2nd segment is actually repeated ... forever (or at least until the prepared amount of measures is reached)!!! As I understand the tutorial "3.4.6 Repeats", this behaviour is intended?! I neither understand why nor do I know how to achieve what I need. Is the only way to get |:segment1:| |:segment2:| to copy "segment1->segment1, segment2-> segment2"? If so, how do I get at least the right repeat signs in the notation? BTW, I didn't get any repeat signs within the track/segment window up to know. Following the tutorial, there should be small squares at each end of the repeated segment but they aren't. TIA for your help, Frank ```

Hmm, that never occurred to me. Bit of a kludge, but it works. Thanks. -- W J G ```

If so, how do > I get at least the right repeat signs in the notation? Actually, the little example picture there shows how to get segment1 to repeat once, followed by a(n infinitely) repeating segment2. The point you're missing there, which I suppose could be more explicit, is that there must be a gap between the two segments in order for the first one to repeat. To understand why, consider that the horizontal direction on the segment canvas is *time*. If a segment repeats, it has to use some time to do this. Because it uses time, it must also use *space* on the segment canvas, because space on the segment canvas == time. That's why the repeating segments are drawn out visually too. They're there, they're using up space and time in the composition, so the GUI represents this fact. Assuming both segments are just one measure long, and assuming that you want each of segment 1 and segment 2 to repeat exactly once and then you want all playback to cease after the segment 2 has repeated, you will need three segments. The first goes at bar 1, the second goes at bar 3, and the third goes at bar 5. Mark segment 1/bar 1 to repeat, and it repeats until it smacks up against segment 2 at bar 3. Mark segment 2/bar 3 to repeat, and it repeats until it smacks up against segment 3 at bar 5. (If you're out of music, and just need to cut off the repeat, you can use an empty segment at bar 5.) > BTW, I didn't get any repeat signs within the track/segment window > up to know. Following the tutorial, there should be small squares > at each end of the repeated segment but they aren't. Those small squares are just the first and last bits of a segment preview line that has been cut in half by the segment label text, and they have nothing to do with the fact that the segments are repeating. Does this finally make sense now, or do I have to take a step back and start getting into principles of design, and how Rosegarden differs from something like, say, NoteEdit? -- Michael McIntyre ---- Silvan Linux fanatic, and certified Geek; registered Linux user #243621 http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/5407/ http://rosegarden.sourceforge.net/tutorial/ ```
