For someone new to Linux audio and ALSA, I'd recommend something like the M-Audio 2496 -- it's only $99, so you don't have to invest a lot, and provides good sound and MIDI support, hardware monitoring, digital audio I/O, and, at least in my experience, works out of the box quite well with ALSA (and Rosegarden). This card doesn't have an onboard synth, but works very well with softsynths and outboard gear (at least in my experience). From there it's easy to upgrade to the Delta cards, since they use the same drivers. I've also had good luck with the SBLive! -- the emu10k1 car -- it pretty much works out of the box also with ALSA (and therefore Rosegarden) and has an onboard soundfont synth that you can fill up with the sfxload utility. -- Brett |
