I chased up some very ancient and hazy memories.

The most promising looking thing I can scrounge up is something called
"sftovkb" but I can't find anything but very old references to it.

D. Michael McIntyre, and all:

Thank you very much for this key information.

The utility program you remembered is part of the vkeybd (Virtual Keyboard) package, and generates a similar (but not quite the same) text format, though its text format is simpler.

Realizing what it was put me on to the right track in finding what I was looking for.  The text format I was expecting, is produced by the "Import Soundfont" file-menu feature of the vmpk (virtual midi piano keyboard) package, and is used to specify its instrument definitions.  It writes a text file in the format I was looking for.

Actually, though, the utility program you named will be easier to make use of, since it can be used by running the program from within another program.

Thanks again for this very helpful information.
