What Linux distribution are you running?
Did you compile Roadnav or are you using a precompiled package?
Is this Festival or Flite that's crashing Roadnav?

Gentoo linux 64bit compiled 0.17 and 0.18-SVN Festival
If you launch festival without any arguments, then enter the following at the festival prompt, does it say test message without any problems?
(SayText "test message")
It works but it has that Utterance message, not sure what that means..
----------------- festival> (SayText "test message") #<Utterance 0x2ae1f8c48730 -----------------
By the way im using GCC 4.1.2

I've fixed this in my wx3 branch, if you're interested.
https://roadnav.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/roadnav/roadnav/branches/wx3/ (you need the corresponding libroadnav too)
