Run button not active

Hi,

The "run" button is not active on any windows.
What would be the problem ? Config. parameter ?
I have the following message at the bottom of the window : "Travail en cours, patientez" (Work in progress. Wait)

Linux Suse 10.1
rkward 0.4.6 (the same on previous versions).

No problem with R standalone.

The thing that is processing, here, and apparently never finishing up, is the PHP backend. This is responsible for generating R code from the dialog settings.

This works, here, so it's not easy for me to track down. Is anybody else reading this using Suse 10.1? If so, do you see the same problem?

Could you start RKWard with
# rkward --debug-level 3
You will get a lot of output in the terminal. Now hit enter (in the terminal you started rkward from) a couple of times to get some blank space. Then open one of the broken dialogs, and change a few settings. Copy all new messages that appear in the console, and post them here (or, if the messages are too large, zip the up, and post to the rkward-devel mailing list). Maybe this contains some hints on what exactly is going wrong.

You need the php command line interface. I think the package is called php-cli on Suse (not sure, though). Version 4 or version 5 should both be fine.

I was finally able to reproduce the problem you see (at least with some plugins), and I hope to have fixed it in the development version of RKWard.

If it's not too much trouble, could you try to build the current SVN version (http://rkward.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=RKWard_SVN), and test whether the problem is still there, or not?

I got the SVN version, then configure but the "make" step failed. Below it is the error during the make:

Hi Christophe,

well, the make error you get is really weird, and probably something really went wrong during make -f Makefile.svn. Unfortunately, this not too unlikely to happen, as automake versions are not fully compatible with each other. If you like, you could try installing automake version 1.9, which is known to work, and then redo the make -f Makefile.svn and ./configure steps.

Alternatively, I've rolled up a test .tar.gz for you, with all the automake magic already done, so it should only be a regular ./configure; make; sudo make install. You can download this here: http://rkward.sourceforge.net/temp/rkward-0.4.7test1.tar.gz .

Besides fixing at least one problem in the PHP backend, this release also adds some more debug code to help figure out, what exactly may be going wrong. If you continue to see the problem, please try starting rkward with

# rkward --debug-level 5 --debug-flags 64

Then open one of the broken windows, change two or three GUI options, and post the debug output displayed in the console. If the problem isn't fixed already, hopefully that should give me the needed clues.

What do you get when running this?

A blank line, or some output like "/var/www"? In the latter case, that would be the problem (not sure, why no error message gets displayed, though).

Could you also try downloading the files "php.ini", "Makefile.am", and "phpbackend.cpp" from http://rkward.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/rkward/trunk/rkward/rkward/scriptbackends/ (download them to the rkward/scriptbackends subdirectory of the sources from the test .tar.gz mentioned in the previous post)? Then re-run make; sudo make install, and try again. Any luck this time?

ok. So the PHP backend dies before it even produces any output at all. I think I have an idea, now. Could you do a
# sudo make install | grep "common.php"

1) Does that file actually get installed (I think so)?
2) Check Settings->Configure RKWard->PHP-Backend. Does the second option ("Directory, where the PHP support files are located") match the directory the file was installed to?
If not,
2a) Correct it, and try again. Does it work now?
2b) Is this your first install of RKWard on this machine, or could it be that a previous install was interfering?

I hope this is what's going on (and I'll add a check for this condition).

Indeed, that is the problem: The path ("Directory, where the PHP support files are located") was bad.
It was /opt/kde3/share/apps/rkward/pages (where help pages seem to be located ?).
I modifiy the path to /opt/kde3/share/apps/rkward/phpfiles (where the file "common.php" is stored) and all is OK now !

Maybe it would be necessary to change the name of this path "Directory, where the PHP support files are located" by a another label ? Ti give the real name of the directory "phpfiles" ?

Actually, I've removed that option entirely in the current development version. It was useful during development some time ago, but other than that it probably has never done any good, and - as we have just seen - had the potential to cause considerable confusion.
