Reflection - 2001-11-17

The next installment of discussions I would like to start talking about is the Tech Tree.

In Civilization, the tech tree is one of the best parts of the game.  The tech tree allows a player to develope new and great technologies for their civilizaton.  It is a fairly complex structure that allows one society to develope in a different mannor then another.  I would like to expand on the basic concept and add some new concepts to make a much greater tech tree.

One expansion on the tech tree I would like to add is the development of units.  In civilization, units and buildings usually came with a technology.  You learned coinage, you gained a bank.  You learned firearms you gained musketeers.  However I believe the units and buildings should not come with the technology, but should be developed as a technology. With this upgrades to units and buildings will also come as a technology advancement, after the original unit/building was researched.

Another concept I would like to add is the concept of limiting technologies.  This is where one technological advancement may lead to another one not being able to be researched.  An example of this would be in governments.  If a player had a certain government some technologies that would not work in that government type would not be allowed.  A dictatorship may not allow technologies in free speech which would limit a whole branch of technology, including freedom of the press.  Plus is would not allow any development down a competing government tree of Socialism.

Difficulty VS Time to Discovery.  In civilizations, each sucessive advancement cost a little bit more than the previous one.  I perpose a difficulty rating based off of related already known technologies.  Learning a new technology with no other technologies related to it can take longer than learing an older technology where you have experience in other related technologies.  Plus a very difficult technology may take longer to develop than an easier one.  Gunpowder may have been a hard technology to discover but musketeers would be easier.

Finally with one ending note, I would like to say, it is my goal to have a tech tree 10x more detailed and complex than that in civilizations.
