If anyone wants to try it out, I have a simple Gtk+ front-end for rioutil. It lets you load songs from playlists you created in freeamp, xmms, or with a text editor (must end in .m3u).
It also lets you downsample (this is the default) to 96 kbit. You can load mp3 and ogg files onto the Rio this way (creating cached 96 kbit mp3s).
This is still alpha, but it's reached a point where you can use it. There are no binaries, and you have to have a development install of gtk+ 2.0. This is relative to rioutil 1.2a4.
should mention, you also need ogg/vorbis libs and lame
