Answer: by default, I think gedit does not display the bottom panel (View -> Bottom Pane) - is this your case? The R consoles are by default displayed there but you have to make the bottom pane visible using gedit's menu.
If this is not your case, could you please give more details so that I can reproduce it?

    I've struggled with the same issue on Ubuntu 9.10. Making the bottom pane visible as suggested solved the problem for me.

    Ok, good to know. I *might* try to make the bottom pane always visible, but I am afraid that would be an overkill for many users...
