I don't know if you have any channels into HP for
information, but the dv1000 laptop series, at least
with the ipw2200bg wireless card (there are four
different wireless options + none at all on this
laptop, ipw2200bg with and without Bluetooth, and
Atheros with and without Bluetooth) has a hardware
switch, correctly detected by the ipw2200 driver, and
an on/off light.
The switch works autonomously, but the light does not
(in fact, if you press the wireless switch while in the
BIOS the light stays off until WIndows starts.) This
quickly gets confusing, since the switch is a
pushbutton type and the laptop always powers on with
wireless disabled.
So, if you have any ways of obtaining information from
HP, this is something you may want to ask about.

ipw2200-1.0.2 was recently released with some code for
enabling the LEDs. This code is experimental and you have
to enable it in the Makefile.
