0.6.0beta very slow on playback (its slightly better if all
the frequency meters are turned of, but still not ok). The
playback is jumpy, too much CPU is used for audio
playback (both RH8.0/SuSE 8.1 athlon 1200, Alsa 0.9
OSS emulation) on all wavs (xmms plays same files
~1%CPU even with simple visualisations).

Well, it takes about 30% on my athlon 1.2G running alsa 0.9
and OSS emulation to play one sound with the meters and
analyzer on. Then if I play 3 it takes about 42%.

Can you try the new 0.7.0beta release? And, does rebooting
help (just for the heck of it)?

Ok, much better with 0.7, CPU load about 40%; the meters do
not make much difference. From time to time (usuly during the
first one or two passes or when other applications are focused,
desktop switched etc.) the sound is still somewhat droppy.
(anyway, best sound editor on linux ever)

Yes, the sound does get choppy for me when switching windows
when I use gnome, but with kde it doesn't do that. I'll bet
    you're using gnome?

I do need to perhaps address the CPU load when playing
sounds. But for now I'm just focusing on making it stable
    and adding features.

    Thanks

Wrong bet, using KDE 3.1 :-) But I agree with you, this
issue can be postponed for a while. Thanks for all responses.

Hey, just to let you know, I just checked in a change to CVS that greatly improves CPU usage while playing a file. I discovered a goof (and I wouldn't blame myself) where the timer for updating the play position (the little red bar) was causing the whole GUI to refresh its layout every time the play position changed. I've written an email to the FOX list about it.. but anyway you can check it out if you wanna try it, or just wait for the next release.

Yes, a recent CVS version seems to fix the problem for me.
    Thanks!
