    dave duran - 2020-07-06

hello again. I started to restore again. Selected source ok....Selected Destination....the drive , now # 3 but same drive that has my linuxmint on it and I got a popup screen that says: 'are you sure you want to restore the backup to /dev/sda? Doing so will permanently overwrite the data on this drive !
well, i stopped right there. how do i know it is going to overwrite ONLY my linuxmint partition sda 8 and not
any of the other partitions that have my windows 7 backups and other important backups?
I want to select my linuxmint partition ONLY but I need to SEE IT TO SELECT IT.
until then , I am not willing to take a chance on it.
at this point , i want to cancel my monthly automatic donation. until this is fixed.
i am sure you can understand that.
    please advise.
    thanks
    Dave

      Rescuezilla - 2020-07-07

      Hi Dave,

      Thanks again for trying Rescuezilla!

As I alluded to in the previous support thread, the current latest version of Rescuezilla (v1.0.6.1) still only has rudimentary support for restoring individual partitions:

However, this limitation makes Rescuezilla suitable for the backup/restore of whole hard drives, but a bit less suitable for individual partition backup/restore. Rescuezilla can still be used for the backup/restore of individual partitions (like your Linux Mint partition), but the enduser must not have modified the partition table by resizing partitions or installing new operating systems since last backup. Rescuezilla can still be used in the way you want to use it, but it's something to be aware of. I am improving upon this limitation for the next version of Rescuezilla (v1.0.7 which will be released in a few months).

To re-iterate, if a user makes a backup of a number of individual partitions (eg, /dev/sda8 as you have) and during a restore operation the destination drive is correctly selected, then all partitions within the backup and the partition table are restored. This makes it possible to use Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 to restore partitions individually, but the user-experience could be much better. This user-experience will be vastly improved in Rescuezilla v1.0.7 (scheduled for release in a few months).

I have refunded your Patreon contribution, but this does not cancel your membership. To cancel your membership the best way is log into Patreon to cancel. The only way for a Patreon creator to cancel somebody's membership is to block and immediately unblock them. It says you will be notified of this action by email. Do you want me to do this? Don't worry I will immediately unblock you!

I am currently developing Rescuezilla v1.0.7 and expect it will be released in a few months!

Yes, Rescuezilla v1.0.7 will be able to restore a single partition. v1.0.7 will be released around about September/October 2020. I have refunded your Patreon contribution but if you don't want me to block then immediately unblock you (which is the only way Patreon provides for me to cancel patronage), then you will continue to be a Patreon subscriber and so will again be charged $1 on August 1 2020 unless you login to Patreon to cancel your contribution.

Until then I highly recommend you try a similar application called "Redo Rescue". Redo Rescue will meet your needs better than Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1.

Redo Rescue is written by the original author who disappeared leaving hundreds of unanswered forum support threads almost 8 years ago.

His sudden disappearance and poor user support was the reason I started developing Rescuezilla, but a few weeks ago he returned and he seems to be providing better user support now. The latest version of Redo Rescue will suit your needs better than Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1. The Rescuezilla project is still continuing and has larger ambitions.

I think you will prefer to use Redo Rescue until Rescuezilla v1.0.7 around September/October 2020.

OK, as requested I have cancelled your Patreon contribution (via the only mechanism Patreon provides for 'creator' accounts, by blocking then unblock).

Hopefully you come back to try Rescuezilla v1.0.7 when it is released around September/October 2020!

Thank you! YES I WILL....ReoRescue backs up ok, but WON'T respond to
                restore request.

Isn't that the issue you were having with Rescuezilla?

Redo Rescue is a different program to Rescuezilla. Both applications look very similar because they were built from the same base program. But they work very differently internally. Redo Rescue has better ability to restore individual partitions than Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1.

EDIT: Oh, I see you have created a Redo Rescue support forum topic about a Redo Rescue-specific issue. Sorry, I thought there might have been some confusion between the two separate programs.

It's kind of amusing that there is a separate issues affecting user experience of restore operations in Rescuezilla and Redo Rescue because they work differently internally. Right now I am only providing user support to Rescuezilla and not Redo Rescue, so I hope you get your answer from the author of that application!

Once I release Rescuezilla v1.0.7 in September/October 2020 it will be able to restore individual partitions.

Once that happens, I will send you a direct mesage so that you can try out the new Rescuezilla version!
