Hello. Somehow lost some files on my Linux Mint drive, fortunally I had a partition backup with Rescuezilla. I read that a new beta feature could get individual files or folders off.
I booted up the newest version of Rescuezilla, chose the Image Explorer function, selected the correct Passpord USB drive, and the files were all VIEWABLE.

But what happens then? I couldn't open a second instance of rescuezilla to mount my WORKING drive and copy them over, or copy them to a separate USB drive. So I can see them, but I can't grab them.

    What am I missing?

Thanks so much for creating Rescuezilla.

    Hi Anonymous,

Great to hear you can view your files using the 'Image Explorer (beta)' feature. This likely indicates that you created your backup using without compression, which is required to open up the image folder. Had you used a compressed image, they'll be no easy alternative except restoring the partition to a disk somewhere.

Apologies that the user-interface around the 'Image Explorer (beta)' feature isn't polished (which is understandably a strong criticism of Rescuezilla as it currently is). I started fixing this several months ago, but I never got around to finishing it. Basically the issue is while Rescuezilla is open you can't mount other drives using the file manager, because I disable the service that manages that when Rescuezilla is running.

There are several ways to copy the files and solve your problem:

For small files, one option is, once the file manager is open and you can see your files you can temporarily copy it to the Home folder in Rescuezilla. This folder only exists in your computer's memory so disappears when Rescuezilla environment is shutdown, but it's a perfectly acceptable temporary place for you to copy a bunch of files for a short time. Then when you close the Rescuezilla app you should be able to mount your destination disk and copy the files from the home folder to your disk.

For larger files where using the temporary folder is not sufficient, the easiest way is to open up a terminal and manually copy the files.

is there a command to use to mount another drive? Let's say I plug aother spare drive, or a USB key into the USB hub. How do I mount it?

After closing the Rescuezilla frontend app your USB drive should show up in the file manager. It doesn't while the Rescuezilla frontend app is open, but it should again when the Rescuezilla frontend app is closed. Please let me know if this is not the case.

Be careful with USB hubs: it may be worth plugging in both drives before you boot your computer, as I've seen some USB hubs may briefly electrically disconnect other devices when you plug in a new one, and this could impact Rescuezilla (you may wish to use 'Load into RAM' boot menu option) to allow you to disconnect your original Rescuezilla USB stick.

So I'm not sure where that gets me. I can initially view the required files, then close the front-end up. Now I see ALL my drives. Then what? Is the original drive still mounted? Are they both mounted? Is there a shell at that point where I can copy between them?

I meant, once you mounted the image, you can copy it to the Rescuezilla home folder as a temporary storage place. Then once Rescuezilla is closed, you can mount your original drive and copy it out of the home folder.

Again, apologies for this terrible user-interface here. It's an easy fix, and hopefully it the improvements will land in v2.5.
