    Hi,
I am trying to clone HDD from laptop with Win7 to SSD without success.
The original drive is 500GB, new SSD is 512GB, the cloning starts normally and seems like the first two partitions are cloned successfully but the third (/dev/sdb3) will end with error which I do not understand (since there really is no obvious error message). Everything is set do default, simple 1:1 clone.

    Does anybody encountered similar error?

    Thank you

    Rescuezilla - 2023-10-04

The "error" in your screenshot is displaying the output of the "partclone" command-line application that is doing the clone operation of your third partition (probably the partition will all your data).

However, I can't actually see the error. It looks to be missing a few lines at the end.

It's probably the case there is a scroll bar that appears if you hover over the window, or if you try and stretch the error message box.

The same error should be displayed in the summary screen.

Typically such errors during a clone operation are due to the source filesystem needing a filesystem check (eg, chkdsk on Windows), but I'm interested to see what the error was.

The other common error during backup or cloning from Windows disks is the filesystem being locked due to Windows "hibernation", the error displayed is usually different, but the solution is to restart (not shutdown) from Windows and then boot directly into Rescuezilla. That's not the situation you're seeing here, but you may see it next time you give things a try.

So next time you try, if the error occurs please scroll down and post the additional information! Sorry about this user-interface papercut!

Hi, thanks for the reply. You were right about the hidden scrolling bar, the output text just so lined right and the slider was originally small and easy to miss.

I eventually figured that the source drive was damaged, using dd i got lots if IO errors (which also I did not expect since the HDD was daily driver without any OS crash). So I eventually used ddrescue, clone the drive and this worked.

Just out of curiosity I tried to clone the source HDD to another drive to see the full output and probably using the --rescue option would also work, it's unfortunate that the slider did not hit me first time so I wasted time to figure out whats going on.

      Thanks for your help

    Thanks!

Yeah the invisible scrollbar slider for the big output that only shows up when hovering, and the very long and not-immediately clear error message itself are definitely user-experience papercuts that could use polish!

Glad it sounds like the --rescue option would work in a pinch though!

HI, I AM UNABLE TO CREATE AN IMAGE OF LINUX MINT 21.2 BUT THERE IS NO OBVIOUS ERROR, BECAUSE RESCUEZILLA IS STILL RUNNING. THE REASON MAY BE THAT EACH TIME I AM BOOTING I HAVE TO FIRST CLICK ON ENTER BUTTON TO ALLOW MY LAPTOP DO THAT AND IT TAKES ABOUT 5-8 SECONDS. I THINK THAT MAYBE SOME CREATION OF TIME SCHEDULER IN THIS PROGRAM MAY FIX IT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO COMPLETELY WIPE UP MY HDD IN ORDER TO REMOVE WINDOWS 8 COMPLETELY AND NOT HAVING TO CLICK ON ENTER BUTTON. BTW, I WOULD LIKE YOUR PROGRAM VERY MUCH AND APPRECIATE IT AS WELL IF YOU CAN FIX IT. PLEASE, DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HELP ME IN THIS REGARD? THANKS, MARTIN

      Rescuezilla - 2023-10-07

      Hi Martin,

There are two things to check:

      1. Is there enough free space on your destination disk? Rescuezilla v2.4.2 continues to have a bug where when you run out free space on the destination it doesn't give a good error message

      2. Does your source drive need a filesystem check? There could be something wrong with either your Linux Mint or Windows, so it's worth running a filesystem check on both of these

The 'press Enter' button you refer to may be your Linux GRUB boot menu. It's possible to set Linux Mint to automatically boot after a shorter period by modifying GRUB settings, but this can sometimes be difficult.

It's possible to use the GParted Partition editor from Rescuezilla to delete your old Windows 8 partitions and resize your Linux Mint partition to use your entire disk. However, you should definitely first make a backup image (which you're trying to do) and even then it's a bit difficult to identify the correct partition containing Windows (there's often more than 1 too).

Even if you do remove Windows 8, the 'press enter' at the GRUB menu issue will likely still occur -- you'll need to modify the GRUB settings for that.

      Apologies if I misunderstood anything

    HI TECHNICAL SUPPORT,
    1. THE DISC IS COMPLETELY EMPTY, FRESHLY REFORMATTED, AND HAS NO ERRORS.
    2. THE DRIVE WITH LINUX MAY NEED A FILESYSTEM CHECK, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT. CAN YOU HELP ME WITH A FILESYSTEM CHECK?
    3. I COMPLETELY ERASED MY HP LAPTOP DISC DURING A LINUX MINT INSTALLATION AND THOUGH THAT IT WILL REMOVE BIOS AS WELL, BUT IT DID NOT.
    4. THE PRESS ENTER BUTTON CAN'T BE A LINUX BUTTON, BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM HAS STARTED A LONG TIME AGO WITH STILL INSTALLED WINDOWS 8 AND NOT LINUX MINT INSTALLED. AFTER PRESSING THE BOOTING BUTTON I SEE IMMEDIATELY A MESSAGE (WHICH IS NOT IN BIOS) THAT A COOLING IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND THAT MY LAPTOP WILL SHUT DOWN IN 15 SECONDS. FORTUNATELY, RECENTLY I FIXED IT WITH A SMALL COOLER, SO NOW IT IS BOOTING TO LINUX OK AFTER IMMEDIATE PRESSING THIS BUTTON.
    5. I DON'T THINK THAT I SHOULD USE YOUR GPARTED PARTITION, BECAUSE I THINK, I DON'T HAVE WINDOWS 8. WHAT I THINK I HAVE, IS A PROPERLY WORKING BIOS AND LINUX. BUT I WILL TRY TO USE YOUR GPARTED PARTITION ANYWAY AND LET YOU KNOW.
    6. I HAVE BACKED ALL MY DATA AND I BELIEVE I DON'T HAVE ANY WINDOWS PARTITION, BUT AS I SAID ABOVE, I WILL TRY YOUR GPARTED PARTITION.
    7. AS I SAID EARLIER, THE PRESS ENTER BUTTON DOES NOT BELONG TO THE GRUB MENU ISSUE, BUT IS BELONGING TO THE TRACES OF WINDOWS OR BIOS.

IN CASE I STILL WILL HAVE LEFT SOME TRACES OF WINDOWS 8, AND WILL BE ABLE TO REMOVE THEM COMPLETELY, WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO REMOVE BIOS AS WELL IN ORDER TO DO A FRESH LINUX BOOTING WITHOUT A NEED TO PRESS THE ENTER BUTTON? IN OTHER WORDS, WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO BOOT THE LINUX MINT WITHOUT A BIOS, AND IF YES, WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME IN THIS REGARD ALSO?

I HOPE WE BOTH SHOULD HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING NOW.

ALSO, SORRY FOR WRITING WITH THE LARGE CAPS ONLY BECAUSE OF MY RECENT BRAIN STROKE AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN YOUR BEST CONVENIENCE.

    REGARDS,
    MARTIN

      Rescuezilla - 2023-10-08

      Hi Martin,

I'm glad you were able to create an image of Linux Mint, but I'm not sure how or why it worked this time.

All files saved within the Rescuezilla operating system lives only in your computer's main memory and disappears when you shutdown. To store files for longer you need to save them to an external drive. It can't easily be the same as the USB stick that you booted Rescuezilla from unfortunately.

I would recommend you be extra careful with the steps you take here. Using GParted (and Rescuezilla) there's a chance you may leave either your Windows or Linux Mint system in a broken state if certain operations are done, causing data loss. Especially since the Linux Mint backup you tried to make didn't work the first time and I'm not sure why it's working now.

    HI RESCUEZILLA,

I COULD SAVE A TEST FILE ON MY BIG EXTERNAL DRIVE, SO I AM ABLE TO COPY SOME INFO FROM GPARTED LATER IF NEEDED. HAVING SAID THAT, I THINK, THAT NOW I DON'T HAVE TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL BY USING GPARTED, BECAUSE I HAVE ALL MY DATA ALREADY BACKED UP MANUALLY AND CAN EASY RESTORE THEM LATER ON. THEREFORE, NOW I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF I CAN DELETE ALL PARTITIONS AND RECREATE ONLY ONE COMPLETELY NEW PARTITION TABLE FOR LINUX FILE SYSTEM AND ALSO ONE COMPLETELY NEW PARTITION TABLE FOR LINUX SWAP BECAUSE I DON'T WANT ANY PARTITION FOR WINDOWS LEFT. IN ADDITION, I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET IN THE LINUX MINT INSTALLATION GUIDE, THAT I ONLY HAVE TO SET UP 1 PARTITION FOR SYSTEM FILES IN EXT4 FORMAT. REGARDING SETTING UP 1 SWAP PARTITION, I DON'T KNOW IF IT SHOULD BE IN THE SAME EXT4 FORMAT AS WELL. PLEASE CONFIRM IF I NEED ONLY 2 PARTITIONS FOR LINUX MINT, THAT THOSE NEW ONES SHOULD HAVE THE SAME EXT4 FORMAT, AND IF I CAN EASILY DELETE ALL PARTITIONS AND RECREATE ONLY THOSE TWO ONES FOR LINUX MINT WITH GPARTED.

I APPRECIATE YOUR HARD WORK VERY MUCH.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN YOUR BEST CONVENIENCE.

    KIND REGARDS, MARTIN

      Rescuezilla - 2023-10-09

You're probably correct that the 2 EXT4 partitions are all you need.

But it's hard to guarantee disks using the GPT partition table will additionally have a special small partition about 512MB at the start of the disk sometimes titled EFI System Partition (or "ESP") that contains some key parts of the boot process, which you will also need.

If you disk uses a MBR (DOS) partition table, it may not have this small extra partition at the start.

You can definitely delete the large NTFS partition that will represent your Windows 8 partition that you want to delete, and then you can resize the other partitions to best utilize the space though.

Whatever you do make sure you don't have two identical copies of the same operating system running on two different disks, because these can conflict. But it sounds like you're not going to do that.

Hope that helps. I'm happy to answer any further questions as best I can.

    HI RESCUEZILLA,

I SEE I HAVE 1 GPT BOOTED EFI SYSTEM PARTITION IN FAT 32 FORMAT IN TOTAL SIZE OF 512MB WHICH IS USING 15.28MB, SO AS YOU SAID ABOVE, I SHOULD NOT DELETE IT, RIGHT?

GPARTED IS SHOWING ME ALSO THAT I HAVE
1 fs /dev/sda2 linux-swap PARTITION WITH NO LABEL AND SIZE 2GIB, 1 zfs /dev/sda3 PARTITION LABELED bpool IN AMOUNT OF 2GIB, AND 1 zfs /devsda4 PARTITION LABELED rpool IN AMOUNT OF 461.26 GIB.
CAN I DELETE ALL THREE LINUX-SWAP, BPOOL AND RPOOL PARTITIONS AND THEN RECREATE JUST ONE LINUX-SWAP?

BECAUSE I SEE ONLY 4 PARTITIONS AND IF I UNDERSTAND YOU RIGHT, I DON'T HAVE ANY NTFS PARTITION, RIGHT?

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN YOUR BEST CONVENIENCE.

    KIND REGARDS, MARTIN

      Rescuezilla - 2023-10-10

Yes, keep the 512MB FAT32 EFI system partition.

I am not familiar with ZFS. Those two partitions are associated with a Linux operating system: I looked it up and bpool refers to the boot partition, and rpool refers to the root partition.

I'm confused which operating system this is refering to in your setup. In your previous comment you mentioned you read a guide that referred to EXT4, but in your latest comment is really sounds like these partitions on this disk are your Linux Mint system that you would like to preserve.

There is no indication of a Windows 8 partition like you suggest. It's possible you have several disks in your system. In GParted the top right drop down menu can select different disks.

Without further clarification I can't provide accurate advice on your to achieve your goal here.

    HI RESCUEZILLA,

    THANKS FOR YOUR QUICK REPLY.
AS FOR YOUR SECOND COLUMN, I DO NOT REMEMBER IF I CREATED THOSE TWO ZFS PARTITIONS BECAUSE I STILL HAVE BIG PROBLEMS AFTER A BRAIN STROKE. BUT WHAT I REMEMBER FOR SURE IS THAT I CREATED 1 LINUX PARTITION AND 1 SWAP PARTITION. THEREFORE, BECAUSE OF THIS CONTINUOUS PROBLEM, I WOUD STRONGLY RECOMMEND JUST TO CONFIRM ME THAT I CAN DELETE ALL CURRENT PARTITIONS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 1 512MB FAT 32BIT EFI SYSTEM PARTITION, AND CREATE JUST 1 LINUX SYSTEM PARTITION WHICH WILL BE AFTER A LINUX MINT INSTALLATION MOUNTED IN THE ROOT / DIRECTORY IN EXT4 AND ADDITIONAL 1 SWAP PARTITION. PLEASE CONFIRM IF I CAN DO THAT.

AS FOR YOUR 4TH COLUMN, I ONLY HAVE 1 DISK IN MY LAPTOP.

LASTLY I REPEAT AGAIN, I NEED TO GET A CONFIRMATION FROM YOU THAT I CAN DELETE ALL PARTITIONS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 1 512MB FAT 32BIT EFI SYSTEM PARTITION AND THAT I CAN CREATE ONLY NEW 1 LINUX AND NEW 1 SWAP PARTITIONS FOR A FRESH LINUX OS INSTALLATION. THANKS.

LINK FOR LINUX MINT GUIDE IS https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install.html

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

If you're after deleting all data and reinstalling Linux Mint according to your guide, then yes you can delete everything -- including the 512MB FAT partition.

This will mean all files on your laptop will be permanently erased. Then you can create a Linux installation exactly how you would like.

Note that you don't need Rescuezilla for this at all. You can erase your exsting hard drive from the Linux Mint installation environment without needing to use Rescuezilla.

I'm not fully sure of your goal here still. You have an apparently working Linux Mint environment, and I don't fully understand your Windows 8 issue given your configuration.

But if you do want to reinstall, you can use GParted to delete all partitions and then make a fresh install. Again this deletes all data on your laptop. But it sounds like this might be what you would like to do here.

    HI RESCUEZILLA,

    THANKS FOR A QUICK REPLY.
YES, I WANT TO ERASE ALL DATA ON MY LAPTOP, AND I WANT TO DO THAT WITH GPARTED BECAUSE LINUX MINT INSTALLATION ENVIRONMENT DID NOT WORK FOR ME, SORRY.

AS FOR YOUR 4TH COLUMN WITH WINDOWS 8, MAYBE I WAS NOT CLEAR ENOUGH. I JUST DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANY TRACES OF IT ON MY LAPTOP.

NOW I KNOW EVERYTHING I WANTED TO KNOW, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORK.

AFTER FINISHING A FRESH LINUX INSTALLATION I WILL LET YOU KNOW.

    THANK YOU AGAIN VERY MUCH.

SORRY FOR MY LATE POST. I WAS ABLE TO INSTALL MINT 21.1 AND ALONG SIDE 21.2 AS WELLL. ALSO I RECOVERED ALL MY DATA AND TODAY I WANTED TO MAKE A BACKUP OF BOTH INSTALLED MINT VERSIONS. UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN I SELECTED A DESTINATION DRIVE I RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE SHOWING FAILED TO MOUNT COMMAND. DISC ALREADY MOUNTED OR MOUNT POINT BUSY. BECAUSE THIS ERROR DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO CONTINUE I NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN .

      Hi Martin,

Glad you were able to install Linux Mint as you intended.

That error message is interesting. It shouldn't happen if you select a partition on your destination USB external hard drive and did not use Rescuezilla to visit that drive.

Could it be that you selected a partition on your source drive?

    HI RESCUEZILLA,

    THANKS FOR A QUICK REPLY.
I AM A LITTLE BIT CONFUSED BY YOUR LAST REPLY. ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT I CAN'T IN RESCUEZILLA CHECK MY DESTINATION DRIVE WHEN I ALREADY STARTED BACKUP? PLEASE WRITE IT CLEAR. ALSO I HAVE TO SAY, THAT FIRSTLY, I SELECTED 2 PARTITIONS ON MY SOURCE DRIVE DURING A PROCESS OF SELECTING A SOURCE DRIVE BECAUSE I HAVE 2 LINUX VERSIONS INSTALLED, AND IN THE NEXT PROCESS I SELECTED A RIGHT DESTINATION DRIVE FOR BACKING UP THE LINUX MINT ON USB DRIVE, BUT BEFORE SELECTING A RIGHT DESTINATION DRIVE I ALSO CHECKED THE OTHER DRIVE BY CLICKING ON IT. THEN I CLICKED ON THE RIGHT USB DESTINATION DRIVE AND HAVE RECEIVED THE ABOVE ERROR MESSAGE. PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP AGAIN? THANKS.

    PLEASE LET ME KNOW SOON.

YES, I CREATED A BACKUP IMAGE. BUT AFTER BOOTING INTO LINUX MINT 21.1 OR 21.2 I GOT A WARNING MESSAGE SUCH AS: LOW DISK SPACE ON EFI. THE VOLUME EFI HAS ONLY 0 BYTES DISK SPACE REMAINING. ALSO SEE THE ATTACHMENT ABOUT IT. I TRIED GPARTED, BUT I COULD NOT FOUND HOW TO INCREASE THE VOLUME OF EFI. PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME WITH IT? THANKS.
