The way RemoteSupport works is pretty straight-forward. The diagram in the image may seem a bit too obvious, but it helps to get the terminology right that is used in the application.

Both the client and the server connect to a publicly accessible proxy server. 'Public' here means: it is accessible from anywhere on the internet. There is also an authentication mechanism with which both client and server have to log in to prevent freeloaders from using your bandwidth.

Once the session is established client and server send updates to the proxy and poll the proxy for changes. The proxy doesn't initiate any connection, so to the average firewall or NAT router it would appear as an average website.
