Ok this is strange and I can't figure out how this error is happening.
I have a 2GB SanDisk U3 smart cruzer flash device. On there I have tried a tried a couple of live linux distro's (backtrack and debian-live) Both of these distro's successfully boot from my IBM thinkpad T43p and my desktop PC from the USB device. However when booting from rEFIt 0.11 on my macbook, after selecting the device I get the message:
"boot error"
However backtrack on another manufacture of flash device that belongs to a good mate of mine boots fine on my macbook using rEFIt 0.11.
Now trying to figure out where the problem lies is hard.
Could it be feature on the flash isn't supported by rEFIt ( I'm thinking something to do with the distribution of writing technology that prolongs the life of your flash device.) or the macbook's technical limitations.
Any idea guys?

I have the exact same problem - early 2006 iMac and a Memorex TRAVELDRIVE 2 GB. On the iMac I get "boot error" but the TRAVELDRIVE boots fine on my Toshiba laptop. I've got the SystemRescueCD distro on the TRAVELDRIVE.

I ALSO have the same problem.
- 2GHz (Intel Core Duo) MacBook (MA255LL/A) with 2 gigs ram
- (boot off of rEFIt CD...) rEFIt 0.11
- media: 2GB SanDisk U3 smart cruzer flash drive (formatted FAT32 via Disk Utility)
- o.s.: live linux distro, Backtrack (beta3 version... bt3b141207)
USB stick boots fine on my friend's dell laptop, but I just get the aforementioned "boot error".
I feel stupid not doing more sleuthing, but I have no idea how to even get rEFIt to be more verbose about what the boot error IS... can anyone offer suggestions for at least that? (Short of messing with the code and recompiling...)

I have the same problem on rEFIt 0.11, with a 4G Kingston DataTraveler Mini. It doesn't boot Backtrack nor Ubuntu. I have a white C2D Macbook.
Hope it somehow helps, thank you

Ric: As far as I know, you are the only guy that has started Linux with usb stick in a Mac. What is the USB flash brand of your mate?.
Hi,
I got exactly the same problem with :
- HW: Mac Mini Intel
- rIFIt: 0.13
- USB Key : Sony 2Gb
- OS: Debian Live built with live-helper.
Thanks.
Nico
I think the fail is for the new EFI update...
