Whenever I install rEFIt, the brightness controls in Windows 7 fail to work. Uninstalling it makes them work again. I've searched Google for a solution but it seems that everyone is having this problem. I have a new 2011 MacBook Pro. Also, I had to install it manually since the automatic install is causing issues with rEFItBlesser. I'm fine with the manual install as long as I can get the brightness to work. Does anyone know a fix for this?

I forgot to mention that I'm running OS X 10.7 Lion.

Does the problem occur if you hold the option key to bypass rEFIt (with or without rEFIt installed) to boot Windows using the Mac's built in Startup Manager?

It does not occur if I bypass rEFIt using the option key. It is only when rEDIt is used to select windows from the GUI screen.

Very strange. Does the problem occur if refit.conf has "textonly" enabled?

I don't suppose that rEFIt is using EFI to boot Windows 7? I'm not sure that's even possible with the Mac's EFI.

What's the Windows partition called in rEFIt?

What does the NVRAM say when you select the Windows partition in the Startup Disk preference panel?
    ioreg -w 0 -n AppleEFINVRAM | sed -n -E "/^[ \|]+[ ]+(\".*)$/s//\1/p;"

Does the problem occur if you use the Startup Disk preference panel to boot the Windows partition when rEFIt is installed?

The brightness controls still do not work when in textonly mode.

The problem occurs no matter what if rEFIt is installed. It's definitely a bug of some sort. Is the developer still working on this project?

I don't think the developer is working on the project. But there is a small chance that it's a problem that you can fix.

Can you answer the three questions?

Hello, same problem here (and teher are quite a few others experiencing it, according to mac forums).

My setup: macos 10.6, win 7 pro sp1 64 bit, booting in bios mode, Bootcamp 3.3 - I also dabbled in the past with trackpad++ dirver, but uninstalled it in the end.

When booting using Apple's startup manager, brightness controls work, when using refit, not (brightness does not change, but visual brightness indicator works, ie the dots in it do change).
It used to work in the past...
I'll try to come back with the extra info asked for

Side note: after updating to mac latest firmware and booting via refit, brightness control worked for a while. Then it stopped again, and I am back to booting via option key every time again. I suspect that
    - firmware upgrade reset the nvram of the laptop
    - the event that made refit stop working again was booting into macos
but I'm not 100% sure about either

I also see this problem on a MacBookPro 8,2 (late2011):

*When booting Windows 7 with rEFIt, brightness control does NOT work.
*When booting Windows from the option menu at startup, brightness WORKS.
*When booting Windows using Startup Disk pref. pane in OS X, brightness WORKS.
*When booting Windows from the Windows Boot Camp program, brightness WORKS.

When the brightness works, both the keyboard shortcuts and Windows Control Panel controls work. When it doesn't work, neither the shortcut keys nor the Control Pane controls work. Based on this, I infer that it's something to do with rEFIt.

I wonder if anyone who uses rEFIt has the skills to debug and code up a fix for this type of thing. I don't :(

Just for completeness, I tried loading Windows with GRUB 2 on the MBP:

rEFIt -> GRUB 2 -> Windows: Brightness does NOT work
Option menu -> GRUB 2 -> Windows: Brightness WORKS

That is, if GRUB is loaded from the Apple boot drive selector, Windows brightness controls work, but if GRUB is loaded through rEFIt, the brightness controls do not work. This makes me think more strongly that rEFIt is the problem here.

I did some more digging and found something interesting. This is on a triple-booting MBP (late 2011) with OS X Lion, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 11.10. rEFIt is installed on a different partition from the main OS X partition.

    When I boot:
Option menu -> rEFIt -> Windows 7, the brightness controls WORK

    When I boot:
rEFIt -> Windows 7, the brightness controls do NOT work

That is, when the rEFIt partition is blessed and the Mac automatically boots into rEFIt, the brightness controls don't work. When I force the Mac to boot into rEFIt using the startup option menu (regardless of which partition is blessed), then the Windows brightness controls work.

Based on this, the problem could be with how a MBP hands control over to rEFIt and not with rEFIt itself.
