i don't know if there are users here that can successfully do this, or if it is a firmware situation (that rEFInd can bypass somehow), and i don't know if it's a very specific and unique EFI 1.x (from MacBook 2,1) firmware situation
please let me know more about, and how can i help logging/debugging this situation, if possible
thanks! :)

rEFInd does support booting from USB flash drives, but that support is dependent upon support in the firmware, which is often trouble-prone. On UEFI PCs, it's often necessary to specifically enable early USB boot support or disable "fast boot" support, else USB drives don't show up. Unfortunately, I don't know the details of what causes problems on Macs, but I see that some people have problems on Macs, and there's no obvious solution. In some cases, though, hitting Esc once rEFInd has started will bring up additional devices.

sorry if this question sounds offtopic or nonsense - besides i'm really wondered with rEFInd (after 7 years using rEFIt), i heard that rEFInd allows booting from usb sticks (like from https://astrofloyd.wordpress.com/2014/01/14/boot-linux-from-usb-flash-drive-on-macbook/ ) - so i tried, but i got no success in that
