On my 2014 Macbook Pro 13", the built-in display brightness level while on the rEFInd boot screen seems to be at the absolute lowest possible level - barely readable in daylight.

This started out of nowhere the other day - previously, brightness was at max during boot. After OS selection, the screen brightness jumps back up after a second or two regardless of OS selected. rEFInd has always worked and keeps working nicely to select between OS X, W8.1 and Ubuntu Gnome.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does it sound like a rEFInd issue, or could it be something else?

This is from when you shutdown/restart OSX, it records the audio and screen brightness levels into the EFI nvram. Your startup chime will be equivalent to the audio level and same with the screen brightness. So remember that when shutting down / rebooting from OSX.

For the really curious, these variables can be viewed with 'nvram -p' and can be set as well, although the parameters are not intuitive. I've found that on my notebook I can almost immediately view updated values when I change the screen brightness, but the audio level variable doesn't update at will.
