I've been trying to dual-boot an Intel MacBook Pro for the past hour. I found instructions to do so online, and it recommended rEFInd, which I avoided at first, but kept running into errors during Ubuntu’s boot off the USB drive.
So I installed rEFInd, and rebooted holding down Option. I got the traditional Apple boot selector. So I rebooted again, this time not holding down any keys, and the Mac displayed the Apple logo for more than 10 minutes. I almost force-rebooted it, but the fans started running, and I noticed the external USB drive with Ubuntu was blinking. Eventually, the rEFInd UI came up.
What was that all about?
Anyway, as I was typing this message, the UI changed, but I'm not sure what changed. I think the USB drive dismounted for some reason. In any case, it only seems to show macOS as a boot option, and the UI seems frozen; no key seems to do anything.
UPDATE: force rebooting seems to have brought up rEFInd okay, and I was able to navigate around and choose a bootloader. But alas, Ubuntu still won't boot.
