I tried to boot from the recovery partition, but nothing seems to be happening. There is a grey 'no entry' sign and a grey 'I'm thinking about it' circulating icon. I'm using a 2010 MacBook Pro with OS 10.8. Not sure what version of rEFInd, but it's been about 12 months since I installed it.

If I switch off the macbook, it takes me back to the rEFInd screen, but the keyboard does not work to allow me to choose any other install. Does anybody have any ideas?

I'm guessing the 'no entry' sign means that the disk is not recognised. Presumably I did not set up the recovery disk properly. Not sure what else to do now though.

OK, so I left the macbook off for a while and when I switched it on again after a few hours, the keyboard was working again. Not sure what happened.

Are you able to boot now? What sort of keyboard is it? (Is it a conventional wired keyboard or a wireless model? If the latter, its batteries may be weak.) It could be your NVRAM has been corrupted. If so, resetting it may help:
