I haven't read this in the documentation, so is this a bug or a feature?

I'm trying to boot Debian Wheezy from ext4 Filesystem. Try to boot /boot/vmlinuzXXX failed (boot-screen from refind got stuck). Using the default links vmlinuz and initrd.img in / yields the desired boot.
