    Makez - 2017-09-30

I installed rEFInd and it's not loading. I have two hard drives: a SSD with windows 10 (UEFI), and a HDD with Ubuntu 16.04 installed (UEFI). I installed rEFI with Windows and when I turn on my PC rEFInd starts booting but a message appears: Scanning for new bootloaders; please wait....

I waited for 10 minutes and nothing happened. I had to turn the PC off manually. What did I do wrong?

It sounds like there may be a bug. Did you install any filesystem drivers? If so, try uninstalling them -- especially drivers that aren't required for your system. (Some filesystem drivers are a bit troublesome.)

I have the same problem ,but some details are different. I have only one HDD with Windows 10 (UEFI) and Ubuntu 16.04.3(UEFI) installed. I have used rEFInd for about one year or longer and it worked well. However, After I had updated a driver of my Wacom product yesterday, I reboot my PC and it showed like this:

the problem after i installed a driver of my Wacom products.

I didn't know what to do so I deleted the old rEFInd version(the version number is about 0.10.x) ,downloaded the latest version on the official website and installed it with Windows .Then the same problem as Makez's starts to happen. When I turn on my PC , it shows like this:

the problem after I update my rEFInd version

And it doesn't change until I press the shutdown button.
I have looked up related information on the Official Website, and I find a note on http://lsi.ugr.es/~mcapel/tutorials/instalacion/refind-bin-0.7.7/docs/refind/configfile.html:

But I cannot change any cases on the filenames or the EFI directory in the ESP.And I find another part on http://lsi.ugr.es/~mcapel/tutorials/instalacion/refind-bin-0.7.7/docs/refind/todo.html :

But the theme I use shouldn't have something wrong because I used it before.
I try to install a old version but the problem as the first picture shows happens again.

    Are there more solutions?

The first screen shot you posted shows a memory management bug in rEFInd; however, it's from an old version of rEFInd, so it's uncertain if the bug is the cause of the problems with the later version. Also, the message is from the Tianocore library, so it doesn't pinpoint where in rEFInd the bug is. It would take a lot of back-and-forth effort to diagnose the problem. If you're willing to do this, please tell me and I can start sending you customized debug versions of the program.

You could try dropping back to a default configuration. In fact, it's conceivable that this would work around the problem, since it's possible that rEFInd is choking on something about your theme's image file(s). (Memory management problems can cause interactions between seemingly unrelated things, like boot loader lists and background images.) Note that such a workaround would just mask the bug, though, assuming it hasn't been resolved already and the more recent hang is due to some other problem -- which is a possibility, although Occam's Razor says it's one bug.

Thank you for your patience and prompt response. I‘ve learned a lot from your reply.

Mistakes continue to emerge after taking your advice. Then I downloaded versions from 0.10.9 to 0.11.2 and installed them to test. I find with the version of 0.10.9 installed, the first screen shot I posted yesterday disappears, but the problem the second picture shows is still exist. At last I installed rEFInd with Ubuntu 16.04.3 using PPA, and this time it works well.

So when I manually install it with Windows, it goes wrong. I don't know if it's a universal situation, or is there something wrong with my installation steps. If it's really a bug and I can do something to make rEFInd better, I'd love to do it.

The following is a comparison of the refind directory with the Windows installation (left column) and the Ubuntu PPA installation (right column).I don't know whether it is useful, but still posted here:
