I have partitioned my(MacOS catalina) drive for debian linux use, but all the information i could find seems to tell me i need a bootable usb drive to run it. Is it possible to make my linux partition bootable with an iso file , no usb?

You use a bootable linux usb drive (or bootable dvd but that can be way slower) to install the linux iso to the linux partition, then you can boot into linux and run from there. After linux is installed you no longer need the bootable usb drive. That is the only way I know to install the iso to a mac or any other computer. I'm not sure this anwers you question but hope so.
