In diesem Land? Big brother is watching you? Excuse please the disturbance! Me something came to ears. A relatively unusual rumor kitchen, from which one put forward to me a heavydigestible soup, is the reason of my Mail. Unappetizing is no printout! Is it possible on radio Wege(in for which frequency ranges?) to influence or manipulate someone? Terrorize or to even chicane and? Under the Motto:"Einen at the Sender?Nich quite alone? A violation of human rights resemble special!?! Is it possible, by preparation, the ears and in interaction with possibly available artificial dentures? With relatively simple radio engineering?? In this Land?Hier and today??? Under which motives? Where is the department actually 5 of the BND and the protection of the constitution? Can it be that there are people, which deliver the Federal Intelligence Service/protection of the constitution, on radio way permanently a situation report, without noticing it, in the infancy feasiblly made? By such unofficial coworkers, with the BND and protection of the constitution, after Stasimanier, is information collected of and over, purely theoretically, each Federal citizen? Is there then still another right to Privatsphere? Who actually checks the BND, WAD and protection of the constitution for infiltration??? Into the Mail actually concerns it to me the question whether it criminal items, from which motive of enriching, or groupings from ideological motives is possible, to acquire itself knowledge and technique which were developed at other times, from other Motiven(Westfernsehen?).And does the technical knowledge status place, to that the public admits is really the end of the flag bar? Is it not to criminal items just as possible, I legend that now times played down and does nice-end, individual persons or groups with relatively simple means, to spy from whatever motives always? And doesn't this " Ausspioniererei " represent a substantial intervention into the privatsphaere? It is possible individual persons or groups, one acceptance to of a certain Oeffentlichkeit(suggeriert?), e.g. by Internet pages, how for example the " Pranger"geschaffen could become, times vorausgestzt, to terroriesieren and or chicane, and in everything (the people suggerierten)Oeffentlichkeit?Haben there at the Pranger, or on any other page to be reviled, or slandered, actually a chance to the Gegenoeffentlichkeit?Ist that not character assassination? Some years ago I am by coincidence the page " the Pranger " encountered, at that time ran not yet under the cover of the partner switching.Itself can individual persons, or communities of interests, from pure self purpose, such pages to serve, over under the cover of a doubtful Zivilkourage, through plot any rushing campaigns, own, quite persoehnliche interests to intersperse? Can such pages serve for the co-ordination of criminal machinations? The question, is it possibility or impossibility, technically and socially, individual persons, or also groupings of manipulating or of influencing from an criminal/ideological Energei, terrorizes or to schickanieren, directed.Target group manipulation by mass media are everyday manipulation, from which, more or less, can extract itself. Does the right to privatsphaere, creeping, by transmissions become deep psychological, how, for example " Big undermine brother"? If the Angemailten should be available a certain knowledge status to the topic with one, I would be glad over notes to the topic On the search for responses to my questions maile I different addresses from the Internet on, and hope up-constructional responses and criticisms.Over an attendance on the page <http://hometown.aol.de/reinerhohn38259/homepage/index.html> wuerde I are pleased. If you should have been written down by me several times, then please I you to excuse me this that was not intended. The reason for my anonymity is the fact that with such Fragenstellerei, understandably, fast after the call the Psychatrie loud becomes. Which also method hat(ist). If you should feel the Mail as annoyance, I would like to apologize hereby for it! The artificial Spam hysteria can, are used, in order to prevent the possibility, in the case of a violation of human rights, to create public? Does the InterNet become waterproof??? Hi, I checked in a new version of refdbd.c which hopefully corrects this problem. The code in the previous version worked ok on Linux, but was not portable to BSD-style systems. regards, Markus B.Y.Zhang writes: > I use refdb.sh to auto start refdb service in FreeBSD. Hi, refdbd actually does fork twice if it is run as a daemon, see the function daemonize() in refdbda.c. In any case, zombies should occur only if the refdbd parent process terminates before the clients are done. This is not yet handled indeed, so I'll have to add the waitpid magic. regards, Markus B.Y.Zhang writes: > I use refdb.sh to auto start refdb service in FreeBSD. Hi, I use refdb.sh to auto start refdb service in FreeBSD. After some days running, there are many zombie processes of refdbd. Maybe the SIGCHLD need to be handled(using waitpid) and/or fork() twice to make init process be the parent of the refdbd children. -- <> |

Hi, I did not use your patch but implemented a similar functionality in backend-html.c. My code differs from yours as follows: 1) I did not like the extensive use of DIV elements as IMHO many of the fields should be presented on a single line (e.g. journal-volume-issue-page). Moreover, DIVs will be indistinguishable in browsers that can't handle CSS or if the stylesheet is not available, for whatever reason. Instead I use H1, H2, P, and EM elements to encode the stuff. This output is just as customizable by CSS as your suggestion. A sample stylesheet (based on the one you sent me) is attached below. 2) I added a refdbc command-line argument/configuration file variable to pass the URL of the stylesheet. This can of course be a local path or the URL of a file on some web server. The new functionality is available in the latest CVS version. regards, Markus B.Y.Zhang writes: > > With this patch, the command "getref" can generate html-type result with > more customizing capability. Hi, I'll have to check this patch in detail, but it looks very useful to me. It certainly doesn't hurt to have css capability in the HTML output. I'll try and get this into the next version, which is due in the next 1-2 weeks. They cannot be defined as mutually exclusive by the DTD. But still only one of them applies to a specific bibliography entry at a time. -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

There is a document online, presumably from the University of Chicago, which gives some general rules for formatting scientific documents including bibliographies (sorry, don't have the URL handy). To me, the citation style looked identical to ABBREV, but this may be due to inconclusive examples. I left the style in the DTD as Reference Manager distinguishes it as well from the ABBREV style. The current implementation in RefDB treats it as the same as ABBREV. The TWODIGIT style does not mean at most two digits, but at least two digits. In your example, TWODIGIT works the same as ABBREV. But the range 123-126 would be 123-6 in ABBREV and 123-26 in TWODIGIT. My current implementation assumes that this style does not add leading zeros for pages in the one-digit range, i.e. 3-6 will be formatted as such and not as 3-06. > > C) Pubdate: > Arabic/roman ? > You actually do mean the roman numbers vs. arabic numbers ? I don't think so, because the citation have to differ in something to be different, and this is usually the title, and at least the pages. But it is still possible that someone uses a format without title and writes ibid., p 15 instead of repeating the journal or book name. I don't know if anyone really does, and if so, Reference Manager can't handle this either. > > > G ) The style of the citstyle: > This applies not to the bibliography string I understood, but to preceeding, > following and the separators. The other lements ( Authornames, reference > numbers etc. ) > already have their style defined. > This is not correct. The Citstyle style applies to the whole in-text citation. This is a simplification that I made for working with SGML and XML documents. It is not possible to "pull in" text with markup that would allow formatting with a finer granularity (the text that appears as the in-text citation is created in a separate SGML/XML document together with the other bibliography data, and displayed by the DSSSL or XSL stylesheet at the proper place). For general use the DTD could be extended to allow formatting of the components of the in-text citation. The only use of this in real-life appears to be the string "et al." which is typeset in italics by a couple of journals. > > H) Only the bibliosequence determines the numbering of the references: > a hypothetical conflict: > bibliosequence = authordate > intextsequence = dateasc > > Bibliography: > 1) Author 2000 > 2) Buthor 1999 > 3) Cuthor 1998 > > Text ( all cited in one reference ): > ( 3, 2, 1 ) > > Is it up to the author of the Style to prevent such conflicts > or do I have to take care of them? > I don't see a conflict here. One logic approach would be to sort along all fields in the sequence as they appear in a bibliography entry. My current implementation uses a simpler approach and sorts by authors, year, volume, issue, title, journal, startpage, regardless of the sequence of these fields in the current style. > > J) There are different ways subsequent citations of authors > are evaluated: > embo only compares the first author, and if the publication > years are the same, they are marked. > Embo: > Foo, F., Bar, M., Xu, S. and Fu, F. BTW I don't see Reference Manager as the best possible implementation of a bibliography software. But it is widely used and I think we should aspire to be at least as good as the commercial competition. And, as I mentioned in a previous mail, the Citestyle DTD is not cast in iron so I can improve it before a stable version (1.0) of RefDB is released. Until then discussions about the details are very welcome. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Hello, First I have to tell you that your documentation is excellent. I am now in the process of implementing your DTD but still have many questions. In some cases I am just a little bit unsure and ask, so I can be sure the output of my program will be the same as yours. I hope answering my questions does not cost you to much time. A) STYLE: You exclude bold superscript etc..? B ) Pagerange: 1) Does the preceeding and following of <pagerange> describe only the preceeding and following strings of the end page? ( pages-pre ) start_page (pagerange-pre) end_page ( pagerange-fol) ( pages-fol ) or is the pre of the <pagerange> intended to also be in front of the start page. ( pages-pre ) (pagerange-pre) start_page + end_page ( pagerange-fol) ( pages-fol ) The documentation sais that the <singlepage> pre and fol applies only to the start_page if no end page is available. 2) examples for pagerange formatting: from 13456 to 13512 ABBREV : 13456 512 //all the signficant differences to the startpage are shown CHICAGO : ? //I dont know what this means FULL : 13456 13512 //everything is shown STARTONLY : 13456 //o.k. TWODIGIT : ? //I dont understand how the above pagerange can be shortened to two digits C) Pubdate: Arabic/roman ? You actually do mean the roman numbers vs. arabic numbers ? Monthformat: ABBREVDOT //how is the month abbreviated? Which information does the secondary date represent? Publiication date of the Book with multiple Papers - the papers or the book? D) Authorlist: 1) Since in bibliographies every reference is unique, ABBREVIATEFIRST plays only a role in the in text citations. Have I understood this correctly, because you write "especially" in the documentation? 2) Could there be a conflict between abbreviatefirst and the separators ? Abbreviate ( first or subseq ) cuts down the authors to one, then textsingle is used ( not textmultiple ). Abbreviate( first or subseq ) cuts down the authors to two which separator is then used ? first_author + twoseps + second_author + abbreviatefirst Foo and Bar , et al Is threesepsend used with abbreviatefirst ? first_author + threesepseach + second_author + threesepsend + third_author + abbreviatefirst foo, bara and barb, et al I think it is the normal threesepseeach in each case as the last separator between names. 3 ) Abbreviate cuts down the authors list in subsequent citations. When asame is defined and not empty, are the authors replaced by asame + abbreviatesubseq or only asame 4 ) My observation is that in in text citations the style for two authors seems to overrule the abbreviate rule e.g. ( Foo et. al, 1999 ) but ( Foo and Bar, 2000 ) E ) This is the part I have the biggest problems currently: The formatting of In text citations & their folding into a range In text citations which can be folded into a range e.g. ( Foo, 15 - 17; Bar 18 ). is it always demanded that a range is built, or are there exceptions? Is it true that a range can only be built when the references are numerically cited, because dates can also be fold ( I have seen this in Onkogene once, but dont know if this is really their style ): ( Foo, 1999; Foo, 2000 ) -> ( Foo, 1999 and 2000 ) F ) Things which I think your DTD does not cover yet( although they might not be neccessary ) Is the sign which makes the difference in References of the same ( first? ) author with the same publication year always a small latin letter ? ( Foo, 1999a; Foo 1999b ) A reference can have a number, and this number can be left out. What about the numbering style ( roman numbers, letters ) are there reference styles which use these? You allow the suppression of Authors in subsequent citations ( asame ). Is it possible that a citation style supresses more, e.g. also the title ? G ) The style of the citstyle: This applies not to the bibliography string I understood, but to preceeding, following and the separators. The other lements ( Authornames, reference numbers etc. ) already have their style defined. H) Only the bibliosequence determines the numbering of the references: a hypothetical conflict: bibliosequence = authordate intextsequence = dateasc Bibliography: 1) Author 2000 2) Buthor 1999 3) Cuthor 1998 Text ( all cited in one reference ): ( 3, 2, 1 ) Is it up to the author of the Style to prevent such conflicts or do I have to take care of them? I) The order in AUTHORDATE orders along first author, then date. When those are the same how are the references ordered, by the title, by the secondary authors? J) There are different ways subsequent citations of authors are evaluated: embo only compares the first author, and if the publication years are the same, they are marked. Embo: Foo, F., Bar, M., Xu, S. and Fu, F. (1993a) etc.... Foo, F., Xu, S. and Fu, F. (1993b) etc.... G&D needed a match of all authors ( but the style has changed now ): Genes & Development Foo, F., Bar, M., Xu, S. and Fu, F. (1992) etc.... Foo, F., Xu, S. and Fu, F. (1993) etc.... but: -----. 1994. etc.... instead of Foo, F., Bar, M., Xu, S. and Fu, F. (1994) etc.... in the bibliography, but: Foo, F., et al 1994 in the In text citations. Thank you for reading this. I hope this was all. But I am afraid, I will have more questions once. |

Hi, does this occur with just any command you type or do you see some pattern? I have to admit that I've never seen this problem on the two boxes that I run RefDB on. The only possible bug that I can think of is a problem with the password encryption. I never attempted to verify the implementation with a program that tests all possible passwords with all possible encryptions (would take ages anyway on my hardware). However, all random tests on both Linux and Cygwin never failed a single time. To find out whether this is the problem, please go to refdbd.c. At approx. line 852 you should see a commented-out printf() call like this: printf("encrypted:%s<< plain:%s<<\n", passwd, descrambled_passwd); Please uncomment this line and rebuild refdbd. Then run it in a separate xterm with the -s switch and see what it thinks you use as a password when you run some client commands. If this output is incorrect, I'll have a problem. regards, Markus Peter Herkenrath writes: > > Hi, > every session with refdba or refdbc gives me at least one message > Could not connect to server .... > If I retry the command via history, I win or many times not. > the log file says: > 6:pid=668:Sat Nov 17 20:25:59 2001:server waiting n_max_fd=5 > 6:pid=668:Sat Nov 17 20:26:09 2001:adding client on fd 6 > 6:pid=668:Sat Nov 17 20:26:09 2001:server waiting n_max_fd=6 > 6:pid=693:Sat Nov 17 20:26:09 2001:serving client on fd 6 with protocol > version 0 > --> 4:pid=693:Sat Nov 17 20:26:09 2001:Access denied for user: > 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES) -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

On the client side, a missing argument to any command will result in a zero-length string which is not a problem for strcat. But on the server-side the missing arguments mutate to NULL ptrs which are detrimental, of course. I'll fix this. I believe that there are more such cases where you can crash refdb by doing things you're not supposed to do. These cases should of course be found and fixed, but I lack the time to do this systematically. Any such reports are therefore very welcome. > PS the distribution of functions (daemon, clients) and the file name= s > irritate me > somewhat (refdba.c vs refdbda.c, client functions called by daemon?)= > A paragraph or two in the Programmers Manual would enlighten me a lo= t. >=20 The filenames do make some sense, although a better system could admittedly be devised (if I had the time to do so). For the clients it is more or less evident. On the server side, all files that start with refdbd contain functions related to handling client requests. refdbda.c handles administrative requests, i.e. mainly stuff from refdba. refdbdref.c implements general reference handling, while refdbdbib.c creates the bibliography stuff requested by refdbib. For a better overview you may think about cxref. All relevant comments in the sources use the cxref style, so you can create a hyperlinked HTML or printable LaTeX overview over all functions and variables and info about where they are defined, from where they are called etc. Highly recommended. regards, Markus --=20 Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Dear Mr. Hoenicka, I am thinking about the idea of using your CiteStyle DTD for an endnote like program. I can't join your effort, since I 1. dont use C ( but C++ ) and 2. I want a good integration with the KDE environment. However I have certain questions regarding your DTD ( I have just started reading up on XML, so please excuse my mistakes ): 1. You often seem to declare multiple elements at once e.g: <!ELEMENT (FIRSTSEP|SECONDSEP) - - (#PCDATA)> I think this is illegal, and that you have to declare the elements separately. I also don't know what the "- -" means. 2. How extensive has your analysis of journal citation styles been? Do you think that your DTD will have to change once/soon? Is the order of citation elements always the same ( Authors, Year, Journal, Volume, Pages ), with variations only in style + dropping of elements? Thank you very much for your answers Ido Tamir |

Hi, thanks for the testcase. Your analysis is indeed partially correct. RefDB is a bit inconsistent in treating non-existent field entries. If e.g. the title was missing, there would be no error. If the author (or journal name) was missing, you'll see the error. The technical reason is that RefDB uses different functions to access data in the main table and data in joined tables. I'll fix the backends to let RefDB silently ignore all missing field entries, which is the correct behaviour. I'll try to wrap up a bugfix release within the next couple of days, but you may also use CVS or webcvs to access the fixed files before I upload a new release. regards, Markus Peter Herkenrath writes: > > Hello refdb guru, > my *out of memory* problem boils down to several unpublished abstracts like > TY - ABST > TI - blah blah .... > AU - MySelf > PY - 1999/// > ER - > > the try and error debugging method (with a little help of fgrep,vi and > friends) leads to the > partial (false?) analysis: > 1. the JA tag is missing but required > because of > 2. the backends understand only BOOK || JOUR alike entries. > > regards > Peter Herkenrath > > > _______________________________________________ > Refdb-devel mailing list > Ref...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/refdb-devel -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Hi, now that a few bug reports are coming in, I thought it would be helpful to collect some information about the RefDB setup in order to spot setup or configuration problems. I hacked a shell script that you can get at: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/refdb/refdb/scripts/refdb-bug This script will create a file "refdb-bug.txt" in the current working directory and collects a plethora of information about the tools and the configuration files.
