$ tar -tzf incoming/refdb-0.9.8-pre9.tar.gz |grep version
refdb-0.9.8-pre9/src/svn_version.c
refdb-0.9.8-pre9/src/svn_dist_version

I reckon there must be a simple way to remove the file after unpacking it. Did
you run make clean or make distclean by any chance? If that causes the problem,
I'd have to fiddle with the Makefile.am to avoid losing the file.
