I just had an idea:

I'm big on annotations, which means also exploiting the semantic power 
of xml.  So, stuff like:

<quote page="33" source-name="Jane Doe">a quote</quote>

...and such.

But this leaves the question of how to add this markup easily in a 
web-based interface of the sort that Rob and Matt have been working on.

How about a wiki-ish solution?
