IANAC (i am not a cataloger), but they are standardized for the most
part....if you have to do original cataloging on an item (ie, not using
OCLC or some other MARC clearinghouse), i think you could come up with
different call numbers...i might be wrong on this tho, and will ask
someone with more expertise...
