I guess the motivation here is: <span>s are completely neutral, they
do not carry any meaning at all, thus they offer more "flexibility":
the CSS can do whatever it wants with them.
On the other hand, <p> mean "this is a paragraph", which may not be
wanted. Correct me if I that was not what you meant.


BTW: I find that <http://www.htmlhelp.org/> is kind of the ultimate
HTML reference. The precision of the standard, but translated in human
language. Featuring, among others, deep hyperlinks into the standards.
