This works with <em> just as well. Have a look at refdb.css:
em.periodical { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 80%;
font-style: italic;
color: #003366;
background-color: transparent;
}
em.volume { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 80%;
font-weight: bold;
color: #003366;
background-color: transparent;
}
