Hi Jason,

you're probably missing the development files. I've never used RedHat,
but many distributions use different packages for the runtime
libraries and for the development libraries+headers. A binary
installation of the mysql client requires only the runtime library,
that's why it works fine. In order to build a driver, you need the
additional development package.
